New addition to the tank and he is great looking. I did some research and he will be beautiful in the adult state. I will try to get a pic and post later.

Any one have one or any experience with them.

As a matter of fact, yes.
I don't know how to break the news to you gently, but a Vlamaingii is a very poor choice for a home aquarium.
Have you ever seen any large ones?
There's a reason.
They get big. Really big. Like 24" long big.
I don't think the 560 gallon aquarium at the zoo is large enough for an adult Vlamingii.
Here's one that outgrew a 180. It's now pushing the limits of a friend's 300 gallon FO:

This fish consumes a 16oz. pack of krill and two packs of Musibi nori every two weeks. You need a good skimmer to handle that waste!
All Naso species are fast swimming fishes that eat a lot and produce a lot of waste. Any of them will certainly present a challenge as they grow- especially in a small reef aquarium.

Yes I did look them up and the one I got is about 1.5 in and he has a long way to go to get there. Also Gary not to seem crazy but it seems really that no fish is good for a home aquarium they all get very big. Even my yellow tang someday he will have to go also due to size. HE will be up for sale some day from now when he gets to big I won't let it get out of control. Thank you for the info.

This is not true. There are plenty of attractive fishes suitable for your aquarium.

I hope you understand that my posts are meant to help you and others- it's easy to jump to the wrong conclusions just reading posts on the internet.

just my two cents. I had a friend that had a vlamingi they grow really fast and yes poop a really lot!! You will be amazed at the growth in a years time especially if fed properly. Good luck

Gary I do not take anything that people say in these forums personally. I tell you what I appreciate all the honesty. I know that sometimes the LFS can just leave info out or lie just to make the sale. So needless to say he was fairly inexpensive and I am sure when he gets to big for my tank I will be able to find a good home with everyone on here.

PS. I admire your advice I have read advice you have given to others and you are a great source of knowledge.

Our mission statement:

The Upstate Reef Society of New York is dedicated to improving the husbandry of marine life in a captive environment and promoting the conservation of the world's natural marine and coral reef environments. The Society encourages responsible reef keeping and provides information intended to help those interested in keeping marine and reef aquariums do so successfully.

We were both on the steering committee for the Upstate Reef Society of New York and I know that you must know that this fish will never even come close to reaching its adult sizes in your tank. As steering committee members of URSNY it is our responsibility to promote the good husbandry of marine life in a captive environment and you posting pictures of this fish in your tank does not do that IMO. I would seriously consider removing this fish and to not post any more photos of it on this thread, it’s just depressing.

Please don’t take what I said in the wrong way but if we don’t stand up to good husbandry who will? Everyone makes mistakes and I am sure no one holds it against you. That fish just doesn’t belong in your tank…

An inch and a half fish is not being mistreated by being in a 65 gallon tank. He knows it will grow large and he knows he will need to keep up with a tenacious eating fish. Slamming him in a public forum has no place. All you are doing is further "jumping on the bandwagon" of trying to put him in his place.

FWIW, even if you have all the tank space in the world 450 gallon, 467 gallon...even 900 gallon, most if not all fish will ever reach the same size as they do in the wild.

First of I wouldn't call it "slamming" and second off I completely disagree that "most if not all fish will ever reach the same size as they do in the wild". If given the proper environment any fish will grow to its full site in captivity. By the way I am not jumping on any bandwagon either ;) I am simply stating my opinion and what most would agree is fact. A 65 is too small for a 2 foot fish, that fish will out grow that tank in under a year. I didn’t mean to offend Namyar and there is no need for you to turn this into something its not. It was not a personal attack and I am sorry if I offended anyone…

scott michael says the vlamingi get 10.6" in one of his books ... but i have seen plenty of them that are about that same size and dont have adult colors....

Fast growers??? ... the one at CF in the 180 has been in there for almost 8 months and is still the same size. I dont know how long TRS had one in their 180 but was in there as long as I could remember. Ryan at CF has one that he has had for about 4 years and is about 7".

Dont get me wrong It will someday outgrow a 65 but I know alot of people with excessively large tanks that would love to have it when it gets that big. Not really fair to the fish but so is taking any fish out of the ocean .. JMHO :) :D :) :D

I was being a jerk, I admit it. It was totally out of character for me to do that. Not having the best night, I know that is no excuse but hopefully you guys understand…

Tom yanked that fish several months ago- it was causing some destruction in the living coral display.
I'd like to know more about people with excessively large aquariums. Where are they? What's considered excessively large?

That fish is beautiful, in anycase... nice colors! Do they get aggressive with other fish when they reach adult hood?
Let's keep it real. That specimen looks very thin and needs some immediate attention- make sure to offer it nori and some kind of small meaty foods like HUFA enriched mysids several times a day.

This is a case where I don't think Nate is out of line. If you can't debate what's appropriate or inappropriate without getting along, why bother with posting on the subject?
The bottom line is that it's just a fish. I had one for dinner last night.
No Naso species is threatened or endangered. It's simply an inappropriate family of Tangs to routinely offer for sale, IMO.
Some others happen to agree and some don't.
