Vlamingii Naso Tang

Fish?
My friend has gone to Florida for two weeks. I haven't been to his house since last year. He asked me to watch his tank for him again since going away last year when I first watched it. When I was there last year, he had just purchased a 6" Vlamingii Tang. He has a 90g tank. When I arived at his house on Friday for the first time since last year, I found that his tang had grown a good 5 inches. His Vlamingii is now close to a foot long!!! I spoke with him today and told him that despite loving the fish myself, he should really considder giving/selling the fish to me where it would be happier in my 180g. He said that he would think about it and wouldn't trust it to anyone else (which was nice to hear).

After reading this article tonight, I am in a position where I feel that it is best for the fish to live with me. Granted, it seems to be the type of fish that should be left in it's own habitat however, since it is in the situation it is currently in, isn't giving it a better home the right thing to do?

With that said, if my friend does agree to hand it over, there will become a day when I too should look into giving him to a bigger and better place to live.

Here is the article that I read.

Vlamingi tangs are one of my favorites. I currently have a 4" vlamingi and he's amazingly tame. When i put my hand in the tank he swims right over and lets me pet him and even turn him onto his side. Very cool fish imo and excellent algae eaters.

I would NEVER place a 12" long Vlamingii in a 180 reef aquarium

OK, that may be true. However, what is the right thing to do with a 12" long Vlamingii that is currentlty residing in a 90g reef? I'm trying to do the right thing, not ignore a bad situation.

junior needs a much bigger home- preferably 300 gallons or more. It's still gonna grow bigger. I helped relocate one Vlamingii but I don't know of another large aquarium that might available to accept a Vlamingii except maybe Kent E.

what about strong museum??? throw it in the 12-hundie???

I believe that they already have one in that tank, however if I remember correctly, you can house two together without the worry of them fuding. I could be wrong.

After seeing Kents tank today I was actually thinking that it needed a large tang.

Here is a picture of him. I took it with my camera phone today.

He really is beautiful!!!

wow that is a very pretty fish. Good luck!

If you know if there is a retirement home with a 300+ salt water reef let me know where it is so I can start planning my retirement.

On second though we should get a people to invest into an retirement home and then just build a 300 gallon plus reef into it. And then we can all retire and maintain the reef together. That sounds like a way I would like to retire. Sorry for going off topic.

I visited a 2000 gallon reef tank in Florida recently that had a school of vlamingiis... had to be 8 or more in there, all of them at least 7-8 inches. Was pretty crazy. I would have to talk it over with our contractors, but if they give it the ok and your friend is willing to donate it, then I'd be happy to give him a good home at the musuem. People love the big fish in our tank.

They are beautiful fish even for being so plain. My vlamingi lets me rub its belly and likes to eat from my hand, like a puppy dog when I come into the room at the glass wanting some attention and food. haha!
