Vortec owners ? for you

I have been on the fence for some time on these systems. I just read on their web site that the motors maximum temperature can be between 50 & 60 deg/C. The quick and dirty math comes out to 140 deg/f! Man that seems hot to me. Vortec owners please chime in.

PS: I am looking into the MP40's

Rich don't know the exact temperature of mine but when I run it all out on top speed my motor does get pretty warm. Just be thankful its on the outside of the tank :).

Rich,

They do get pretty darn warm, but like Dave said, they're on the outside of the aquarium, so they don't really impart heat to the water.

That being said, I've been running them since August 2008 without any issues whatsoever. (knocks on wood...)

mine does not get that warm as i can not run it wide open.moves the sand bed around and i end up with a big pile under the pump.its at 3/4 from full speed.been making waves since macna with no prob.

Interesting for sure. Thanks for the re:'s

Since the drive concept is similar to most power heads (alternating current to drive rotary function) it makes you wonder just how much heat can be transported into you aquarium with most/all submersible type pumps. +1 for the technology. Next step in my mind is how to achieve the external drive mechanism with an adjustable direction head.

Waves away!

I just picked up mine yesterday Rich and there is very little heat exchange into the tank if any. The motor does get very warm but it is on the outside. It's nice though, I got rid of two Koralia's to replace them with the Mp40w.

after all I've read and many months of waiting

I'm lovin' my Vortech MP40:

it doesn't transfer heat to the aquarium (water) like other powerheads do
it's smaller and more powerful than my Tunze Stream
it's almost totally silent
I can place my hand on the dry side and it's warm but doesn't burn
I've had no problems with it since purchase

Gary- I have noticed that many people had issues with sounds with the mp40 but my mp40w is practically silent unless I stand next to it. Other than alignment issues do you think the thickness of the tank glass might have something to do with it? My glass is 1/2" thick and heavy(old glass) and there is only a tiny vibration when it rev's back up in Reefcrest Mode.

maybe that's the answer because my glass is also 1/2" thick.

Alignment is another thing.
I have a hunch that a lot of people experiencing noise problems haven't aligned the two sides properly.

Another potential noise causing problem: running the Vortech all out on 'Reef Crest' mode. Many complaints surface when this is being done. (Mine is silent in high reef crest.)

From experience I can tell you that ANY powerhead (or pump) is more likely to make noise if you run calcium and alkalinity extremely high, so this is another potential problem that many "newbies" fail to realize.
