VorTech MP40es

Well, I finally pulled the trigger on this fancy new technology. I told my self, "self, you are an old school reefer, why do you need this expensive water pump"? Well, I have decided to take the test myself. The problem with "trying something new" for me is, qualifying/quantifying results. Way too subjective for my taste.

Anyway, at the very least, I will have a new toy to play with!

To you VorTech guys and girls, what do you feel are the best settings?

Kind Regards,

It's a really a breeze to dial in a wave with the new module. I think reefcrest random is nice because it allows fish to swim through all levels, whereas with a wave I found them often swimming against the gyre in my tank.

I will be placing it in a 6' tank. I hope to displace two mj mods with this one pump. Leaving 2 mj mods in place. What are the thoughts of this being the only pump in the tank?

I'm not sure you'll be able to get the water flow you want using just an MP40 in the 6 foot tank. The MP40 combined with two maximods will be nice.

I'm going to guess that you'll like it so much that you will be purchasing another MP40 sooner than later. ;)

I love every Vortech I've had the pleasure of playing with.

The mode you choose will depend on several other important factors regarding your aquarium's water flow thus it might not be the best choice to copy what others do.

*Since many are familiar with what I have going on here*

I ran my MP40 on 'Lagoon' Mode.

I run my MP60 on 'Long Pulse' (max to min) set for aprox. 2 minutes.

Well, I have the mp40 installed. Painfully simple to install BTW. Not noisy at all. I am happy so far with the functionality for sure. The changing pattern of flow in the tank is easy to see. An improvement to the previous 4 power heads with alternating flow.

To Scott's post: I will e planning a second when the funds are handy....lol

Really depends on the tank but I find most of my Vortech's on long pulse, switching every 8-12 seconds.

I have my MP10 on my solana on short pulse every other second.

A little word of warning. While I am a huge fan of Vortech's and own 10 of them, the warning they put on them that they can damage your tank is real. My Solana was setup for almost 4 years and had an MP 10 on it for the last 2. The bottom seal recently sprung a leak directly across the tank where the vortech was pointing.

Randy, thanks for the input. I actually recently purchased a used salona cube and the bottom leaked. I imagine.e a vortech would push even worse.

Solona' are made with very thin glass and the seals are not great so any extra pressures to them will increase the chances of a leak.

I had a Wave Box on a 125 for a couple years and that tank started to leak from a side seal. But then, it was also sitting on just a couple cinder blocks with 2x6's across them. Not a very good supporting stand.

Come to think of it, I had recently swapped out the stand for the Solona before it leaked because it got water damaged and the wood swelled up. Just so happens that were the wood swelled is where my Solona sprung a leak.

After about 5 days with the mp40 I must say, well designed and functionality is sweet. I have played with controllable tunze's over the years and have never seen the performance the vortech provides. Short term huge plus! The next natural step for performance will be how long does the wet side last?

Time will tell

Thumbs up for vortech thus far!

It's great to hear that you are truly pleased with the Vortech thus far- they really are awesome pumps! What's your favorite flow setting?

mp40s over tunze

mp40s over tunze

I have read multiple post vortec or tunze my only question is water deflection!
with the tunze you can change the direction.Has this been a issue!
