Want to purchase a silent return pump....

So I had to buy a return pump today, because my old one crapped out. I made a quick run to the closest lfs, and all they had was the sicce syncs silent pump. I don't like it at all, because it's completely opposite of silent. Does anyone know of a 500-700gph pump that is pretty quiet?

Ehiem is the quietest that I have heard. None of them are complete silent, IME. None... even if people say otherwise.

I have a ehiem 1262 & it's pretty quiet. I have to have my head under the stand & be listening for it to be able to hear it. My fluval sp6 is quieter then the ehiem though, & it puts out 4 times as much flow. How u install a return pump can make a big difference in noise

Pumps make noise in two ways. One is the inherent hum of the motor, the other is any vibrations that are transmitted into something that then makes noise. There are a few pumps I've used that generate very little inherent noise, but it's up to you to more sure tat vibrations are damped. I've been quite pleased with the Vectra M1. I only run it to about half capacity, so it is essentially inaudible. Makes a bit of hum at full power though.

I prioritize quiet over all other parameters. I have I focused on quiet for every piece of equipment in my tank. No equipment the silent , But some are very quiet.

After trying quite a few pumps including eheim and syncra silent, I am satisfied with the Sicce syncra PRO for my return. This is completely different than the Sicce syncra silence. I have it sitting on a silicone mat and enka-mat to deaden the vibration. After running for a few days, it is exceptionally quiet. I had planned to get a vectra S1 but I don't think I will need to provide this pump stays sufficiently quiet.

Without the pump running, inside my stand was at 40 dB. With the pump running, it jumped to 49 dB with the iPhone right next to the pump.

Best of luck in your pursuit

40 to 49 dB is big jump in sound. My bet is that a Vectra pump wouldn't increase it by that much...

I always forget exactly, but if memory serves each 3db increase is a doubling of sound volume. So 9db is a lot!

3db is double. That is correct.

My Ecotech Vectra L1 is very quiet. When I tried it out I couldn't tell it was on. Hoping to get it installed permanently in the next few weeks.

Guys, I used a little decibel meter because I was having a difficult time hearing the difference between two pumps I was testing. Maybe I'm not using it right. It most certainly was not a major increase in Audible noise.

I can assure you the tank is quiet by anyone's standards. My previous tank had a soundproofed stand and this one is quieter.

Best of luck

Understood. I was able to get my tank down to about 45db at night with various soundproofing and equipment changes ..... almost inaudible. Then I replaced my lights with the new Radions, not realizing the fans run 24/7 and are most definitely NOT inaudible :(

My Sicce Syncras are not loud. When the fans on my hydras kick on you can not hear the pumps. When the fans are off there is a little background hum, but not much. Basically my house has to be shut down to hear my tank. All the regular stuff going on is way louder than my tank.

I directly compared an Eheim 1262 to a Sicce Synchra Silent 4.0 and it wasn't even close... the Eheim was far quieter. Kind of irked me because of the word "silent" in the name of Sicce's pump. This is anecdotal so take it as such.

I also run an Eheim 1262 on my tank. It's not silent, but it's quieter than my skimmer, my drains, and my MP10s.

Nice. Directly in front of my tank, stand door closed, 43-44db....quiet

I use the eheim compact 2000, its dead silent. They updated the pump, which isnt always a good thing, so I made sure I bought another one before they ran out of the older model. You can still find them on Amazon. Flow rate is about 588 GPH.
