Warner Marine Now Has A Pellet Product

I thought if you were dosing vodka and your dkh was above 7 or 8 it would cause burnt tips. I was wondering if vodka and the EB pellets were the same. If it's not a concern that would be great. Also what reactor would you recommend, I have a 120 gallon and a 50 gallon sump.
Thanks, Ken

The burned tips issue seems to be highly variable. Some people have issues; others don't, even with vodka. The problems isn't well understood, but some tanks might be much lower in nutrient content, and thus be more prone to the problem. Our test kits can't measure very far down into natural seawater levels of nutrients.

Depends on how much you want to spend, The BRS duel is a good choice but the PM reactors are very nice too. Just one cost a little more than the other.
If price does not matter I would go with the PM as It's real nice. JMO

PS, Bertoni, Great reply as always! LOL:fun2:

jsdancer - I am having the exact same problem as you. I posted about it on page 22 of this thread. Hopefully one of us can find a remedy. My pellets moved about the same as yours using the pump that came with the reactor. I had 250ml in at the time, then I had the other 250ml and no movement. I tried a Rio 1400 and still had no movement. Let me know if you find a solution and I will do the same for you!

I had the same issue with my reactor.
Start the reactor...put your thumb on the outlet tube to close off flow then remove and repeat immediately till you get a bouncing motion on the pellets...do that a few times and youll get them moving nicely...

I have the AVAST marine reactor and like it. I went the Build yourself route and save about $20. For me, I'm running 750ml in my reactor and think I should have gone with a taller one. Currently it's 14" total height and probably should have got at least a 17" one.

OK guys, I've been using 500ml on my 180g (220 total volume) for a week now with good results and was planning on adding another 250ml tomorrow night. I noticed a little buildup of what looks like bacteria, but possibly proteins, on the water surface of the return section in my sump. What does it look like to you and do you think it's safe to move forward adding more ecoBAK tomorrow?

No bacteria blooms so far, which I'm assuming is a good sign. :)

Very interesting,
Usually that happens when there isn't enough flow or the skimmer isn't skimming enough. At least that is my guess. But with your setup that may be neither. Hmmmmm
I am planning on attending MACNA in Orl. Jon wil be there. I can always ask him. Also there will be a carbon source forum so if there is a question and answer during the presentation I can always ask that for you.

Drummer,
I see you have the nextreef smr1. Any thoughts good or bad on it? I have the same size tank as you, and dont know whether I should get the bigger reactor model. I (like everyone else in the world) will eventually go bigger on my tank, so I was just curious how much room you have left in there? How much total volume of biopellets do you think you could fit into the SMR1 keeping it effective?

NextReef says their reactor is most effective with no more than 1.5 liters or so of pellets. Currently I'm running 500ml and will add another 250ml tomorrow. I'll take another pic for you to see when it's running 750ml. I would say easily you could fit 1.5L and still have a nice rolling tumble. They are great reactors imo. :)

ok great, yea I think with up to that capacity, I could run it on 300 gallon tank. Sounds perfect. pics and vids would be great thanks. So I have been doing A LOT of reading on Bio Pellet usage, and I am ready to pull the trigger. I was curious if anybody out there would mind sharing why EcoBak over NP or Vertex? It does seem as though WM product does have a few less problems generally speaking.
Also, I have not heard of anyone dosing Microbacter 7 in conjunction with these pellets. I am not coming from any previous Zeo method or vodka dosing. Do I need to dose any bacterial supplements to get these going? Or am I just supposed to let whatever natural bacterial colonies I currently have try and establish themselves? Many thanks..

I have been following this thread but I cannot recall if this has been asked.

How many GPH should I put through a TLF 150 reactor? I'm kicking around the idea or putting 500 ml of Warner Marines Pellets into my reactor (assuming it will hold that much) rather than my GFO.

I have a 40g tank with a 45g sump, SPS frag tank. I'm now on week 4 running the WM pellets. I use a TLF 150 reactor, a maxijet 1200 for pump and about 300ml of pellets and running BRS GFO in different TLF reactor. PO3-15ppm API PO4-0.00 Hanna Checker

The first week I notice the water got clearer and my skimmer(BM150) had a really thick foam head and dark skimmate. I'm running the maxijet wide open and pellets tumbling like crazy. On 3rd or 4th day water got cloudy, so I did 20g water change. Next day water was clear again.

The second week, I see the algae on glass start to fade away and corals start to get light in color and some turned light brown. Then, I start to see clear looking fuzzy-hair like stuff everywhere(on powerhead, on frag rack, and frag plugs) and clear slime in the sump area. I do a 20g water change and take out the pellets and rinse them. I put the pellets back in after I cleaned them. PO4 still 0.00 and PO3 still at 15ppm.

The 3rd week I decide to try something else, so I turn the valve down so the pellets barely stop moving. I wait 2 days and check the PO3 and it dropped to 0ppm. I didn't know if this was b/c I slowed the flow thru the reactor or what. Later that night I put the flow back to full blast. the pellets are tumbling like crazy again. I check the PO3 the next day and it was back up to 5ppm. I decided to try it again slow and no tumble.

Today is beginning of week 4, and PO3 is 0ppm and PO4 still 0.00 Hanna Checker. The clear fuzzy looking algae is in only a few spots , but just a thin coat on the powerheads. The corals that turned light brown have colored tips and still a lighter brownish white color. PE is amazing and the skimmer is still pulling a thick foam head.

I'll let yall know what happens in the next week or so.

I think I've decided on the nextreef smr1 reactor for my pellets, what pump would you recommend using with it ?
Thanks for all the help.

NextReef recommends using a Mag 3 pump (per the manual) but I've seen others that have had problems getting the pellets to tumble with a 350gph pump. Could be other factors involved, but I would be inclined to use a slightly larger pump and put a valve on it to really dial in the appropriate flow.

I have 500 ml in my TLF 150 reactor and it fits, if you look through the earlier part of this thread, I had photos. I use a Maxijet 1000 with the valve closed a little, enough to keep all the media tumbling, but not forcing any to the top.

As promised, here's a pic of my NextReef SMR1 now running 750 ml of ecoBAK pellets. I would say even with the pellets tumbling they take up a little less than half of the reactors volume. So it's safe to say there would be plenty of room for upwards of 1.5 liters. :)
