Warner Marine Now Has A Pellet Product

Hey platax you r not too far from me. I live just south of you on Hwy 27 in Davenport.

While I was at MACNA a few weeks ago I had a chance to speak with Jon from WM about the EB. He did say that the entire amount was recommended. But he also stated that some aquarists had experienced algae blooms when they started with their entire batch.
Some aquarists here like myself have started with less and so far have had no algae blooms but as poolkeeper says you will not know the whole effects of EB product unless you go wth the full batch. Take look at your bioload.

Hey js, I live right off 27 also, by Lake Luisa (hwy 50)!

I will be going up to the full batch slowly because i dont have a choice my only reactor can accomodate only 500 ml untill my new one comes in late next week. I will add 250 additional ml and then again the following week.

I agree. It all depends on your reactor and the pump and take into account what flow will be from pump to reactor.

On the Next reef MR1 Tall the 100gph is not enough, Jon from WM did say that the more EB you use the more it displaces water in the reactor the better they should tumble. I do know that this theroy did not work with me using a 132 gph pump at 500ml of EB.

Well im thinking of getting the PM SR35P with 500ML of EcoBak with a MaxiJet 1200. That should work right?

Well its been about 3 days with the 500ml running. Something is definately starting to happen because i placed a new 100micron filter sock yesterday and today it is clogged up. Not dark in anyway from detritus, still white but clogged up. Do you think this could be aa bacteria film?

Thanks DJ ... so anything to worry or do about it?

Nah, just keep changing your sox and keep an eye on your skimmer. It's going to go crazy over the next couple of weeks. Circulation is key if you have a full blown bloom, but that shouldn't b a problem either.

Hey All....

Hope everyone is doing fine and your "pellets are tumblin'"!

A couple of weeks ago I posted here that I had started using eco-bak in my 29 gallon Bio-Cube. I had talked to Jon at WM and told him of my set-up. He was kind enough to send me a baggie of eco-bak. I filled my small nano reactor about 3/4 full and made sure the pump was adjusted so that the pellets are tumbling. Since the reactor sits in one of the rear chambers, I would check it every couple of days to make sure the pellets were tumbling and not sticking together. The first couple of days the skimmate from my skimmer was milky, cloudy and then I was getting a darker skimmate. Now the skimmer seems to be working "normally".

I am happy to say I am noticing a definite improvement in the way things are looking. The corals are showing better PE and color. And I don't need to clean the glass everyday, like I was doing before. The clarity of the water is amazing. I think it's great that here is a product that works equally as well in smaller systems!

Count me in as a satisfied Eco-Bak user!

 great to hear!!! Keep us posted.

Day 4 ... Like I stated earlier, filter socks are clogging up within 8 hours. The water seems much clearer but I wont do any testing until Friday. So far no bacteria bloom, but I am not expecting one as my nutrient levels were already pretty low and I am starting at half dose.

The 500ml pellets seem to be having a harder time tumbling all of the sudden. Is this an indication of bacteria colonizing it? I am shaking the reactor every few hours to get them going. Is there any danger if they don't tumble full-time?

I have another reactor on it's way and hopefully the full dose will tumble nicely in it.

I have been using the ecobak for almost 4 weeks now and I haven't noticed any changes in my setup. I have a 90g with a small sump and I am using 500ml in a next reef MR1. Do I need more ecobak since I am not noticing any difference nor any of the other "normal" things (cloudy water, skimmer going crazy, etc)???

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked your params before and now?

You need to know what your starting N03 and PH4 was to see if they have decreased. Many wont see cloudy water so this is not an good indicator

I wouldn't sweat it. The pellets r just gooing up. Once the system reaches stasis in a few weeks the pellets will break back apart and tumble on their own. You're right on schedule.

NICE, thanks again DJ. I am now noticing white filaments inside the reactor attached to the pellets.

Soooo.. I couldn't help myself, had to check No3 and ph4 :)

In four days:

PH4 dropped from .08 to .02 (nothing has changed in husbandry)
N03 has remained constant at 2.5

I would say they're working! Is it weird to see such a drop in phosphates but not a nudge in nitrates?

Thinking about going with these pellets. I'm interested in them as a replacement for GFO and I/O Nitrate Reducer (PCL).

I have two options:

1. Run the pellets in a bag (or no bag) within a Rena Filstar XP-1 canister. I have a thin filter sponge and GAC in the canister now, that I periodically rinse and change, respectively. The canister is a champ and is rated at 250 GPH. I really love this thing, because it's so easy to maintain. Also it has built-in grates that will work perfectly for holding pellets.

2. Run the pellets in a Phosban 150 reactor, driven by a Rio 600. Currently it contains EcoPhos GFO, a standard GFO media. I am very lazy about changing it because I hate dealing with the reactor... it always requires fiddling with the screw top so it doesn't leak. I have no idea what the flow rate is.

What would you guys do? I'm really leaning toward retrofitting the canister for convenience reasons.

Also where can one buy the pellets online?

If it were me I'd do the reactor if you have it. That way the output can fairly easily be directed to the skimmer intake. Plus the way they're designed they won't clog like a filter will. If you're going to do a bag, don't even mess with the Filstar, just float it in your sump in a high flow area up stream from your skimmer - that's what I did.

Thanks DJ!

I guess I could try the Phosban reactor. The canister's outflow is already pointed at the skimmer intake though, which is why I'm hoping that option would work. With the Phosban reactor, I worry about the Rio 800 (correction - not Rio 600) providing enough flow. Will the Filstar really clog? I thought the media doesn't require fluidization... But I guess the mulm may clog it.

tbaquatics.com has the pellets at the cheapest price i have seen 59.99 for 1000ml a savings of 20.00 over other outlets FYI
