Warner Marine Now Has A Pellet Product

I didn't check my params for awhile at all until a week before my tank cycled. It cycled REALLY quickly so I don't think it had a negative impact on anything. I need to test my nitrate this weekend, but I don't think there's a downside so far to starting up with the pellets.

Bloom

I've been using the EB pellets with success since Aug. Within the last 24 hours I have what looks like some sort of bacterial bloom. Corals look awful. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

I would get some MB7 and start dosing with that every day. I should clear up your bloom in no time. I'm really impressed with the product and enjoy the clear water it produces.

I started the EcoBak pellets on Saturday at 1:00pm (12-11-10). This afternoon(12-15-10) I came home to a tank with a slight haze in the water and my skimmer producing a whole lot more foam than I've ever seen it produce. This is really quicker than I expected. The production of foam is also very smelly compared to what it has been in the past. I'm running about 500mL in a 150 TLF reactor powered by a Maxijet 1200. The reason for starting the pellets is my nitrates have been as high as 160 according to the API tests and last Saturday was running at about 100+ if I'm reading the color correctly. My system has been running for about 5 years and nitrates have always been a problem for me. My system is a 120 with a 65 sump/fuge. I'm quessing that I have about 150gal of water. I'll post the nitrate reading sometime this weekend when I have time to test the water. Just posting to add my part to the on going testing of the pellets. :fish2: I'll also post this in the other thread about solid carbon dosing.

I have to agree with you I did a little cloudy water at first and my skimmate has been slimy and yucky since I've used the pellets. You must I repeat must use a skimmer when using bio pellets and direct the output of the reator towards the input of the skimmer. Ican't imagine using them without a skimmer.

I've had positive results using MB7 as well. I think it's a great product.

I started using 500 ml on 6/30/10 and I also ran GFO. I had a bad algae issue. It took changing the GFO every week for about a month to fix the issue. I still have some minor algae, but no where near where it was.

Now, as for the pellets, I'm not sure they've done anything for me. After 5 1/2 months the pellets are still the same size and the same quantity. My PO4 & NO3 appear to read 0 - 0.5 NO3 & 0.00 - 0.08 PO3. My chaeto has even started to stop growing, not sure why. My friend added his about a month before me and he started with a liter and had to add another 500 ml a few weeks ago. His old pellets are about 1/2 the size of the new ones, so his show signs of working.

I would presume with numbers that low, that is the reason your chaeto growth has slowed. Also, the bacteria needs food to multiply and consume the pellets in mass, so my guess would be since your system is presumably nutrient poor it's going to take longer for the pellets to be consumed. My understanding is bacteria consumes the pellets as the need arises and when conditions are right for the bacteria to multiply. Sounds like you don't have a huge need at the moment.

My EB has been on my system from shortly after the initial cycle which was months ago and I don't see a big difference in the amount of consumed pellets in my reactor either. But, my system started with all base rock and has been nutrient poor from the beginning. Not an expert on this but just some ideas...

My tank was also started with new Marco rock and the EB was added shortly after the cycle was competed. As stated above with a LNS you may not have the demand on the pellets that others may have due to systems being loaded with No3 and Po4 from the start of using EB. My pellets are also not showing much decline in volume either but things have never looked better. I swear it looks like there is no water in the tank at times, And i have also started the MB 7 but I'm not sure about the actual results yet, It definitely makes the water clear after use so it must be doing something to help the system.

My tank is using them up pretty good. But I do have a very big bioload in my 180 Gallon tank and I do feed heavy. I do know that Warner Marine Pellets work very well. My tank is proof of it and Falconut knows it.

I know exactly what you mean Bill. Shortly after starting the pellets a few months ago I went downstairs and looked at the tank in awe, thinking to myself I see fish but where's the water! I don't know if it's the pellets alone or the combination of the EB and MB7 but I've never seen water this clear.

What pumps are you using for your reators? I have 2 BRS reactors, one for carbon and other for ecobaks and it's barely tumbling. Im running it tee'd from my eheim 1262. Can you get a good tumble with MJ1200? If not, how about Eheim 1250 to run 2 reactors?

OK, I added my other 500mL of pellets. I tested my water and these are my parameters:
SG - 1.025
Nitrates - 80+ API
50 - Salifert (new)
Phospahtes - 0.5
MG - 1170
CA - 480
dKH - 13.4

I had a slight bloom this first week with the first 500mL. I will expect a slight bloom this week with the second 500mL. Other than that the few corals I have seem to be fine and the fish are fine. Water does seem to a bit clearer but that is just my preception - no proof :spin3:

After using the pellets for about five weeks my nitrates have gone down to zero from about five. But my phosphates ace hung around .25 ppm. My macro algae has stopped growing and I have a lot less hair algae. I would say the pellets take nitrates down to where plants have a hard time growing. Will start running some GFO to lower phosphates. I can say that the pellets themselves won't appreciably lower you phosphates. Maybe they can keep them low once you get them there.

Switched over to the MR1 reactor today and got a whole 1,000ml in with room for another if needed. It's much nicer than the BRS Duel IMO.
JasonD, Some Phos will remain absolute 0 IMO is not the goal and your .25 is still a little high. I have mine staying @ 0.036 PPM or 12PPB checked with the Hanna phosphorus checker and they have been holding at this level for months. All my corals look better than ever.

Hey Bill...given your experience dosing vodka how many drops per day are you using of the MB7? Assuming you are dosing the MB7 daily.

I ask because I have been using the WM EB pellets for about three months now. I had to replace my sump (long story) where I was running a refugium with some mud, chaeto and rock. With the EB my chaeto pretty much died off and I wanted to go with a ULNS anyway. Nitrates were and remain at 0 (API) before and after the removal of the refugium. My P04 with the fuge was 0 (Hanna) and now is .06.

I swapped out the fuge about a month ago and this past week algae has been growing on the glass much faster than in the preceding four weeks. This prompted me to check my parameters again and nothing out of the ordinary. pH swings between 7.9-8.1 but everything in the display tank looks happy. Anyway, I'm thinking about starting a low dose MB7 routine.

Well I'm no expert with MB7 routine i tried it because a friend is using it and having great colors from it's use in his tank. I have been adding 2 capfuls a week and adding it to the intake of the EB reactor to kind of kick start the EB every now and then with more and diverse bacteria, At least that was my intention. I have clearly seen a improvement in water clarity without a doubt it's like when i had been Vodka dosing and had it all dialed in just right. No proof but it has had an effect in a positive way IMO in the month or so i have been adding it.
Your added Algae may be as simple as Dino's from adding the new sump like as if you were at the start of a new set up and getting the typical cycle type algaes that we all get at the start of a new tank. There may have been some Silica present on the new sump that feeds Dino's for a while, Or it could be from the EB because i had a phase that caused the same thing but it was on my sand bed and lasted for several weeks and then just stopped in the early day's of using this product, But that would just be a guess. Keep an eye on it and see if it lasts for any length of time and if it does then try and zero in on the cause.
