Switched over to the MR1 reactor today and got a whole 1,000ml in with room for another if needed. It's much nicer than the BRS Duel IMO.

Bill,

Did you make any modifications to the reactor prior to using it? Would you recommend any? I'll be setting mine up over the weekend.

Hopefully with some luck i'll meet you at the frag swap. I might be sending you a pm before then :p

-Pete

Hey Pete, Will be glad to meet you I'll have a table right across from the AC. That being said my MR1 came with the screens already added by the previous owner, You can get them at Hobby Lobby in the sewing section as they are used for needle point or something like that. For the MR1 you need the 8" circles i believe there is ten in a pack for 1.49 and you just cut them to fit. They serve to keep the Pellets from escaping the reactor and to keep it from clogging like the foam pads that come with the reactor.
Only other thing i did was drill more holes in the bottom of the tube that the water comes out of the bottom of the reactor. It helps to keep them from channeling with only the two that are drilled from the factory. If you need any more info shoot me a PM

Thanks for the info Bill. I always seem to be going to Lowes, Hobby Lobby or Radio Shack for something reef related. If I make it to the swap i'll be sure to introduce myself.

Six Weeks with EcoBak Pellets

Six Weeks with EcoBak Pellets

Ok, here are my numbers for week number 6. I'm still a little disappointed, but I realize anything takes time in this hobby.
Temp 77.0 F
SG 1.024
PH 8.1
Amon 0.0
Nitrites 0.0
Nitrates 80 API 50 Salifert
Phosphates 1.0 API
dKH / ALK 15.0 dKH (keeps going up ???)
CAL 425
MAG 1155

I went ahead and did a 10% WC (15 gallons) - can't wait any longer.

I'm a little concerned there has not been any imporvement that I can see. I still have a little bit of "cloudy" water. I was really expecting some imporvement. The reason why - my skimmer has been going crazy for about a week. I've had to empty my cup three times the past 7 days. Before - I might empty it every two weeks or so. I've always gotten black coffee looking stuff. But now it is more of a light colored "baby poo" color - brownish/yellow and it really smells a whole lot worse than the previous skim mate. I think the colors on all my tests might be changing some or that is just a whole lot of wishing on my part - I'm not sure, but I will check back in with a report in a couple of weeks I guess. How's everybody else's numbers doing ---- getting better?

I'm surprised by the Alk test. With those kind of numbers you are borderline precipitation imo. Is there a way to double check that?

I'm not sure - you got me. I've been concerned about my ALK for several weeks now - it just keeps going up according to the new Salifert test (last three tests). Two weeks ago it was 13.4dKH and four weeks ago its was 11.0 dKH. I don't know where it would be getting alkalinity. The only things I've changed the last 6 weeks are the pellets (I certainly don't think it is the pellets) and I started feeding a whole lot more. My phosphates where reading at 0 for a long time and I thought maybe I couldn't get my nitrates down because my phosphates where not in the right Ratio?

What do you mean by "'precipitation"? The snow effect? Your not dealing with the brightest bulb in the box here.......

Yes, that's exactly it. I would presume your Ca would have to be higher for the "climate" to be right for a precipitation event to happen but I would think the high alk can't be good for your corals at the very least. Are you currently dosing 2-part or adding anything that could potentially raise the alk levels?

I do add 2 part, but I haven't added any alk in a long time. I've added CA and MAG, but not ALK. Do you think my new ALK test may be bad? With my high nitrates - I don't have a whole lot of corals. I have a lot of shrooms, some paly's, 5 anemones, green/star polyps, branching hammer coral, and some cloves. The reason I'm really working on my nitrates is I would like to have some stonies someday. I really appreciate your help and sharing of your knowledge.

Mag Is the possible reason it is going up if you are adding without testing to see if you need it? Mag will raise the KH if over dosed for no reason and you levels are out of wack so to speak.

I do test for all three. And I am aware that they are out of whack. What would you suggest? How do I go about getting them in line? Do I stop dosing everything? And hope the Alk comes down as they all three drop? I'm not sure how to go about this? The nitrates have definitely had my attention for quite some time now. Thanks for everyones help.

I would suggest water changes as this is the fastest way, But with Salt that has the correct KH/Ca/Mg that you are looking to achieve. Or by adjusting the numbers before you add the water so they are helping your problem not adding to it. And yes i would stop adding any more Alk until the levels come down Via demand just add what is being consumed and needs replaced.

Red Sea Coral Pro.

thats interesting i was using the red sea coral pro with the pellets for 5 months and my alk. was at 16.4.
ive pulled the plug on the pellets due to red algae on the sandbed.
everything was fine.
my tank has been running for 10 yrs .i think the pellets are better for younger tanks.
my alk has gone down to 8.4
i have now switched over to royal nature salt

Hi guys,

Had my new 200g cycling a couple months. About 2 weeks ago I hooked up my lights and the normal diatoms bloom came and went. Last week i hooked up and 400ml of ecobak with a slow boil. Only starting with 400ml but bump up slowly.

Since them im getting heaps of cyano. not sure if it has anything to do with the ecobak or just all the light on a newly cycled tank.

Any advice would be great

thanks

Aaron
