Warner Marine Now Has A Pellet Product

Extra space

Extra space

Mine have been back on line for 2 weeks now. My algae bloom was just diotoms not cyano and is almost gone now. I'm excited to see what these can do long term. It will be great to ditch the gfo and my fuge. Although I don't know what i'll do with all the extra sump space?

Buy a bigger Skimmer Hehehehe, They can't be big enough for me. Or another route is make a Cryptic Zone in that space.

So I wanted to update. I have been running 6-7 weeks now and no GFO. My PO4 is lower that what I used to run. Just a slightest tint of blue which is <.02 with the right numbers. My PO4 was just a bit higher before running GFO. This will be my last update though since I am getting out of the hobby and the pellets are going to another tank. So far I say these work as advertised.

Thanks bud. I really enjoy it and would like to get back in but need to get my priorities straight. Such a shame too cause my tank is running so damn good right now.

Be well, I've always enjoyed your posts.

Maybe we'll see you back someday.

Got my 500ml of the WM ecoBAK pellets on Wednesday (6/30). I figured I'd post some photos. To the left is the full 500ml in my TLF 150 Reactor dry and to the right is the 500ml running with a Maxijet 1000 open full. It seamed that some of the pellets clumped at the top, it looked like there were some air bubble on them.

Here are some photos of some of the nasty algae that I've got. Hopefully, this will eventually outcompete it and cause it to die off. The left photo is of the lower right side of my tank, this is a lower light area. The right photo is of a rock on the very top of the left side of my tank, directly under the light.

After 3 days, well about 2-1/2, here is a photo of the Reactor. As you can see the clumping has stopped. Must have been the air bubbles. This media is tumbling really nice for me with this reactor/powehead combo. It was way too high for the GFO, I had to close the valve almost halfway.

I figure I'll joint in from time to time to report how the use of this media is working for me.

So, far I haven't noticed any more production from my skimmer. I assume this doesn't occur until after the bacteria starts to populate the media sufficiently. Does anybody recall how long it took before they noticed this?

I think on said about 3 weeks give or take......I have had mine running for about a week and haven't noticed anything yet....But it's early still.

Old timers

Old timers

Burnt tips from too high of Alk with liquid carbon dosing is common. However, nobody knows the mechanisim behind it. Some theories, but nobody knows.

With solid carbon sources it is anyones guess. So far nobody seems to have any issues with burnt tips and high alk, and there is no reason to belive that using solid carbon in a reactor vs. liquid carbon in the tank would be the same.

While plenty of people love to push high Ca/Alk/Mg numbers to drive growth.... most of the old timers and those that have been in this hobby for a long time seem to see more problems with abnormal high number than benefits. Seems that more conservative numbers are much more reasonable. That's my opinion based on reading other opinions. Seems more room for error being in the middle. So I have always tried to stay in the middle... Ca 420, Alk 9. Still higher than natural sea water values.

With over 30years in this hobby I guess I'm an old timer, And the Range that I think is best for KH is between 8-10 and i have never had any Issues Dosing Vodka or any other carbon source at those numbers.
If your tank looks good at the KH that you have currently i would not mess with trying to change that # is all i was saying, I think the carbon dosing and the KH range are not directly related for it to work weather It's at 8 or 10 or 12 as a factor in dosing. JMO.
Sorry to see you get out, And hope you can work it all out in the end.
Zach said he's been talking to you for a long time on 3R and you will be missed.

I saw no problems with my Alk at 8.6-9 with Eco Bak.

I saw some burnt tips at LFS, he replaced MH lamp. I think burnt tips is a water clarity issue as much as a chemistry. I have noticed burnt tips after changing GAC and ZEOvites. My KH was in th 6-7 range at the time.

I have only had "burnt tips" when I ran lower KH around 6.5 I was trying to keep it around 7-8 but my salifert kit was reading high and actual was around 6-6.5 I believe. Since bumping alk up to 9-10dkh Ive yet to see tip recession.

falconut,
In about three weeks you should start to see some improvements and by week for four the ecoBAK pellets should really start to kick in. The ecoBAK pellets looks like they are dancing around very nice in your last photo!
Talk to you later and have a great 4 of July. Tell the family Hello!

Does the effluent need to exit the reactor next to the intake of the skimmer?

Does not have to, but it greatly helps the nutrient export process by allowing for the greatest amount of bacteria (and all the nutrients they consume) to be removed and not ultimately die and release nuntrients back into the system. Plus, doing so limits the amount of carbon released into the system (gets skimmed out) which could otherwise fuel the growth of cyno.

`Reactor

`Reactor

what flow thru a reactor is recomended with ecobak?

The BRS Reactor seems to work excellent for a 500ml dose and the Dual would be good for the 1000ml amount and so on. JMO
I have been running mine in that reactor with a MJ 1200 3/4 open and it's doing very well like this.
I have an Insane amount of SPS in a 59gal with a 30gal frag tank along with 40 gal sump. I'm running 500ml and all is doing Fantastic with no other media besides some Chemi Pure Elite Passively in my return section of my sump. I'm talking over 100 SPS Frags/Colony's a Huge (Basketball size Hammer coral) and a Extra large Red Carpet Anemone 12"+++ Oh and forgot about the 3 Frag racks Full of friends stuff I'm Babysitting too.
IMO this is the best product to come along in many years in this hobby, So far So Good let see what happens long term?

Interesting stuff. I think I'm going to give it a try. I've been dosing vodka/vinegar for a few months now with fair/good success. It'd be nice to not need to worry about remembering to dose the carbon source anymore. There has been more than once that I've forgotten.
I'll need 1.5L of EcoBak. I currently run an ATI BM250 on my tank. But I also have my old ASM G3 w/recirc mod. I wonder, would it be worthwhile to put the ASM back on the system, and plumb the reactor's output to the ASM? I'd run it in addition to the BM250, and solely to skim the reactor's output. At 150-200 gph through the ASM, I think it would do a good job of skimming out the bacteria, along with getting rid of the CO2 produced. Or would this be overkill?
