Warner Marine Now Has A Pellet Product

i have a couple ?'s

what are "ideal" parameters for the pellets/ulns?( ex. lower alk to max is 8)

when did you see the the pellets working? month/2 months

I'm trying to keep my reef as close to natural seawater as possible. This basically follows the "zeo" method of ULNS.

Minimum - Maximum
Ca 400 - 410 mg
Mg 1200 - 1280 mg
KH 6.5 - 8
K+ 390 mg
Salinity 34 - 35 ppt

It can potentially take a few months for the pellets to properly seed to where you are seeing solid nutrient reduction. Hard to say as every system is different. ;)

thank you very much.

hummmm, idk if i like those #'s lol.
i just started the pellets (ecobak) 3.5 weeks ago .

i really want to understand why lower the parameters. is there an article/link or somewhere i can read more about this?

 Try this link below. But it is widely understood "higher" alkalinity can cause serious problems when running ULNS. Bleaching, tip burn, tissue necrosis, etc can be a result of runner higher than 8.0dkh. The recommended Mag levels in the article are higher than others say is appropriate. Mileage may vary. :D

That's a very good (Simple) explaination of how it all works, Did you note the Potassium Addition statement of being necessary (Possibly)
On another note my EB has after adding new Marco rock (Dead) rock to my system, To make more real estate has clumped up and will no longer tumble. Do you think it could be that a mini cycle of sorts is causing this? I haven't seen any other adverse effects of adding the rock It's just strange that they happened when the rock was added. Any thoughts???

I've been running 500 ML of BRS pellets in a reef octopus reactor (medium size) for 3 weeks now and have not noticed any significant difference with the algae in my aquarium. I am not sure if the pellets have started doing their job. My lifereef skimmer does look more productive but the appearance inside the aquarium has not changed. I am running the reactor with a mag 3 on full blast as recommended by BRS and am wondering if I have too much flow.

I've wondered about testing for Potassium myself. Wondering what the benefit to the corals would be if dosing is needed...? Seems like a mainstay for Zeo guys to keep Potassium levels up.

Should I continue to run activated carbon with the pellets?

TIA

Yes. There's some debate as to what kind of Carbon to run. Some claim ROX 0.8 is too efficient for ULNS and a more "mild" carbon be used. Currently I am using ROX but have some Lignite left over I might try this month.

I have been running Jons pellets for a couple weeks now. My water is testing the same or real close, But my skimmer is working better then it ever has. It is interesting to follow every ones results.

To all who are new at using EgoBAK Pellets. It will take 4 to 6 weeks for the pellets too seed. So when youi are testing 1,2,3 weeks after starting you may not see much with water testing as you like.
Also make sure they tumble very slow. Slower the better!
I have a 180 gallon heavily stock tank and I feed every day. It took about 4 weeks for them to seed.
I have been using EgoBAK now for all most one year and my tank loves them.

Brett, Any thoughts on why the EB clumped up like it has??
Bill

You may need to clean you pump. If you are new at using Pellets they may get clumped up from heavy Bacteria that might be in your water.
Clean your pump or shake the pellets to get them moving again.
If you use sponge in you reactor pull it out that can get clogged also.

I have been using them B4 they came out to the general public, Very successfully i may add. My Pump is a Manifold and i do not run any sponges i use the MR1 reactor and they were fine until i added some new Marco (Dead) Rock to my tank. My thoughts were maybe a bacteria spike that has caused this to happen. Maybe if Jon Warner see's this he will comment what he thinks may have caused this clumping as it has not loosened up in over three day's now. It may be nothing but i would rather be sure of what is happening.
Thanks for your input but that is not the case here.

Hey Bill, I had a strange bacterial bloom 1.5 months after starting up my tank. Again, my tank was 100% dry Marco Rock (key largo). The bloom wasn't the stereotypical "white out" type of bloom that people see sometimes with pellets etc, it was more of a clear slime that mostly coagulated in the return section of the sump, but there was a little on the rocks in the display as well. This happened 2 months before I started using ecoBAK for reference. The bloom lasted 48 hours and then completely disappeared. I believe the Marco Rock initiated this bloom in my system. My guess is it's just a reaction of the new Marco Rock you added and should subside in time. Probably just bacteria needing a place to go and the easy place to hide is in the pellets. ;)

Here's a pic of that bloom from my system on 6-16-2010

Thanks Brett, Jon Warner has answered my questions and thinks like it is from a bacterial spike from adding the rock and will subside in a few day's.

Great news falconut! What size system are you running the ecoBAK on?

I've got a 6 year old 90 gallon with two 20 gallon tanks, one is a refuge and the other is a true sump w/heater, skimmer, etc.

I've got a medium bioload and I feed a cube frozen mysis/brine + a little flake or pellets every day, sometimes twice a day.
