Was shocked at what I saw about ten minutes ago...

Long story short, I ordered a standard spotted grouper for my 120 about a week ago, he was eating minnows before I took him home from work but not much else. I got him home and he wouldn't eat any of the mysis shrimp, but would eat shrimp pellets and chopped scallops (obviously he likes bigger chunks of food). I decided to get him some live minnows to make him happy and vary his diet. I brought 5 minnow home and let them loose. The grouper ate 3 over a minute.

This is what shocked me. As soon as I dropped the minnows in, my 2.5 year old 6" hippo tang chased down a minnow and munched it down in near identical fashion that the humu trigger that I take care of at work does. It took him another couple chases, but he munched down a SECOND minnow. I know hippos aren't the friendliest tang, but this was unreal to me. My bigger vlamingii looked at the minnows, took interest and followed them, but didn't engage.

Sharing my random story from tonight.

That was interesting. I have read that freshwater fish aren't the most nutritious thing to feed saltwater fish. Have you researched that at all?

Hippo tangs start out more of a herbivore and work their way into being planktivores. So do Naso species.

I used to have some large Anthias that would gulp down (freshwater feeder fish) Rosy Reds.

It's all good. Thanks for sharing your story with us!

Hippos eat a lot of meaty food. Sometimes they go after big fleshy corals too. I can't keep trachyphylia with mine.

IMO/IME they are very intelligent. I would not introduce any small Gobies into the aquarium with the Hippo in this thread because it might mistake the goby for a feeding.

Obviously with a GROUPER you might want to avoid ALL small fishes!

I've fed a few larger tangs silver sides and they down them rather quickly. We have to remember, eat or die is how they think sometimes. So LETS EAT!!
