water evaporation question

i have a 5 gallon tank i use for an auto top off for my 90 gallon display and 30 gallon sump.

My question is, what is the normal evaporation rate for a tank my size because i am currently refilling my ato every 2-3 days.

thanks
Darryl

depends on temperature of house and tank. I currently have a 80g+30g sump with 2x 250w MH's and a fan blowing on the sump that turns on when the temp hits 80. I use a 10g tank for my ATO and I refill it about once a week, so yours seems about normal.

Good lord.

I will never again complain about my full 'party' cup per day top off on my nanocube

my 90 with no sump consumed about 1 gallon per day. With sump it went right to 2 gallons. I added the turf scrubber and now I'm at 2.5 gallons per day

phew....! I I thought I might be losing water from some where. I didn't realize there was that much evaporation with this size of tank

Thanks guys!! :)

You'll probably also notice a change in evap rates as the season changes. In the summer I have a much lower rate of evaporation than in the winter when the furnace is running and the air is drier.

tell me about it--oh my aching back for having to supply so much more ro/di water to clients who won't invest in ro/di filters:D

I still haven't gotten around to buying a ATO yet and hooking it up to my RODI unit, I was thinking about using my old rubbermaid sump as a holding tank for it. That being said I top off about a gallon to gallon and a half a day, I do have T5's though and our house stays at 73-74f year round. Oh and I keep my tank at 75-76f year round.

It's been hot and DRY here lately. I've been going through almost the entire 5g bucket in one day on my 150g!

Here's a side question: where does evaporation go? Say I have a 150g tank and evap a few gallons a day. In a room the size of 12x13', where is all this evap water going? Does it get sucked up in the carpet, the TV, my computers? I am venting my canopy into the attic, so I know where most of mine goes, but for others, I was curious where water ends up if humidity is not vented out? just wondering

In San Diego, I can just leave a couple windows cracked practically year round, so it's a non-issue for me. And if it is hot or cold enough to have to run heat or a/c, the heat will dry up humidity (not that much will be evaporating anyways), and it's probably low humidity outside if the a/c needs to be on.

I hear ya, I have about 4 or 5 friends that get me to make ro/di for them cuz they're too cheap to go out and buy one.:lolspin:

I evaporate ~30-40g per week in my 500g system during the summer and 40-50g in the winter. My fishroom is sealed so the ambient humidity in the room is 80-90%. If it was exposed to the house, it'd be a lot more.

Also, note that if you run a gas or oil furnace, they pull a lot of humidity from the air so rates go up significantly.
