Thanks James. Tunze ATO is on the way.You can make that water level whatever you desire.
That will be where you notice evaporation and should place your ATO.

Unfortunately, that sump is already done. The LFS custom-made that for me. It was their design, no input from me ha ha. So what problems should I look out for in future (apart from what you've mentioned)? Its the "return (pump) section"
And you don't want an under baffle like that as its going to force that section and the one before it to be the same water level..
You would be better doing a single over baffle after the skimmer and then doing an over/under right before the return section.. that will take care of the height issue plus stop chaeto (assuming fuge in center section)/bubbles,etc... in one shot..

Ha ha. It is possible the LFS person is not so knowledgeable. Because he came to my house and set it up that way. But I do remember seeing this design elsewhere too. So as you said it will still be functional. Then either you misunderstood which side is which (skimmer side in your drawing should be return section and visa versa) or they don't know how to make a proper sump
It is entirely usable though.. Just not done as it should be and if you flip it then its a "better" setup..
Really minor issues though but not optimal..
