I would buy ro water. Or buy a ro/di unit before you fill it. I don't think you need or want distilled.

I would mix it up personally. Just get 40gals of RO/DI water and buy some salt.
Right now I believe a few LFS in the area is selling buckets of Seachem Reef Salt for around $35 ea. It's really one heck of a deal. Especially when starting a new tank and having the initial "cycled" water which you want to eventually change out.
I recommend possibly purchasing a RO/DI system and just filter the water yourself in the future or when the budget permits. I found it more convenient and also gives you the piece of mind knowing the filters are cleaned and changed appropriately.
What area of Manteca do you stay around Josh? Fernando (Fern68) lives in Manteca and can possibly loan a hand whenever possible I would think. I also frequent the areasince I work in Modesto and live in Stockton. I can also lend a hand and maybe some RO/DI water if you need some. Just bring the containers
