water removal

so sad, just filled a 35 gal trash can with water from walmart, added the salt from Seachem, and went to fix the pump. I returned to wet carpet! The trash can had tiped over! Just so sad. It was going to be the 1st water change with the proper system. Been doing the weekly changes with a 5 gallon bucket! Was kinda looking forward to "easy, fast water changes". What a kick i the azz. The trash can had been outside to get rid of the new smell. Kinda cured it in the rain. I sat it up beside the tank. Good...not all the water ran out, bad...it all went under the tank! Its impossible to soak it all up. Thinking I shoulda got a small car instead of fish!

if that is the first and only spill you have consider yourself very fortunate.
I have a basement sump ect and have had a tank fall through a work bench, a refugium burst from a stress fracture due to drilling it, at least three sumps that have leaked, a power head hose slipped off a phosban reactor draining 60 gal all over the floor.

But I must say I have never had a leak in a trash can---so I guess you have me beat :) LOL

Small cars smell the same once you forget to close the windows during a storm. Try using a powerhead to move the water about and use a bucket that only contains as much water as needed.

How does one tip-over a 35 gallon trash can filled with water? That is over 200 pounds of water and not top-heavy...

Big Cat?

Priceless!!!! Laughed myself to almost peeing my pants! Only because my cat may not be big enough but darn it, he'd sure try.

On the case of spilling though, be hopeful that is your only majpr one. I've only been in the salty side of this hobby for less than a year and already have had to buy new towels to handle all of tha spills I've had. Maybe I'm just clumsy.........

It might be your first mishap, but I guaranty it wont be your last. After awhile you just shake your head & start cleaning up.

I splash and slosh every now and then. lol I haven't had a big saltwater spill yet.

Yesterday I was toping off the evaporation in my 125g African cichlid tank when I dropped the container that I was filling it with. It tipped one way, I over corrected and couldn't control it and it fell on the floor. About 6.5 gallons of water. by the way, I'm only a 5' tall chick...so I shoulda left that to my hubby or filled it half way and then dumped it in and filled another half way.

Ok, 2 hours later, and no clean towels in the hood! Got the dehumidifer down there, and can't even find the cat! The salt will just have to dry and get vacuumed up. And yes, it does smell kinda fishy. I have carpet over concrete, this is in my den. And I guess the can was a little top heavy. ... Lesson learned--don't top off the can, don't leave the cat to watch the fish, and never leave the windows down on a small car in the rain. I feel so much smarter now!

Oooooohhhhhhh.......my head hurts now:lol:

my head usually doesn't hurt until the morning:beer:

dehumidifier will not be enough get a large fan and run it or the pad under the carpet is going to start to smell and be ruined if you don't get it dry quick. Even a carpet cleaning machine would be good to use to get the salt diluted but get a fan in there or you will be regretting it. I have seen enough insurance claims over the years with wet carpet and 48- 72 hours wet you might as well write it off.

soaked it up with all the towels, dehumidifier on, fan going, still cant get under, or behind the tank with a carpet cleaner. Gonna go with candles...
maybe it tipped over because the wheels were not rated for 200lbs of water? Need a flat bottem trash can.

what kind of trash can is this? To be honest I have never heard of a trash can full of water just falling over... maybe if people knew what type of can you are talking about you could save others this same problem.
