No he's not..he's running 2 400w 20k xm's right now with 3 x 140 watt VHO's I believe.

He was running 10k 250's awhile ago but he still had over 2 watts per gallon.

forgot aout that.

My point is, those were grown under 250s.

weird here is a question

a guy i know propogates and the only lights on his tank are vho actinic white and vho actinic blue (2 bulbs and he has the best looking corals and they grow very fast)

Iclao, thats nice and all, but its not really accurate. Take that Lux meter, and measure the lux in 20-50' of water. Its NOWHERE near that high. Thats where our corals come from. Theyre (in most cases) not 4 inches from the surface. In many cases, our light IS much brighter than noon day sun.

I think you have misunderstood my point. I am talking about the light intensity above water surface. The light intensitiy almost halved right below water and decrease dramatically as it goes deeper. You will be lucky to get 6000 lux at 24" depth in the aquarium with a 250W and it is no where near the light intensity where the colorful SPS were collected. Not to mention about possibility burning them.

Watts per gallon is not useless BUT you have to take into account the depth of the tank, water clarity and type of lighting....it is just one piece to the puzzle....
