Wayne's 600 Gallon Build

Newbie Aquarist

Reefing is my middle name
Hi everyone. I wanted to place my build on the forum here. It is also on the Large Reef Tanks section of the forum. Here is the link if you are interested.

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2066256

In short here is what I have. The tank is 96"Lx48"Wx24"H with a center overflow. It has three 2" drains, one of which will be a dry chamber as I will be running my electrical through it. Yes I know you are not suppose to end a sentence with a preposition. I currently have a Reeflo Cat 3 Hurricone Protein skimmer. That might be changing since I want to run ozone in this tank. I am going to have my sump built. I was at a LFS the other day and saw how they had a top off system added to the sump. I thought that was pretty sweet so I will incorporate that idea also. As for lighting I am definitely going LED. My mind keeps changing as to whether to DIY or just buy the fixtures. I will be purchasing a doser and controller. Note this will be a slow build as I can only do so much every month. Hope you enjoy and input or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

So here are pics of the tank. It is presently in my garage going through a leak test.

The next missions are:

1). Plug the holes that I was going do a closed loop.

2). I will plumb the tank and do a leak test. That's all for now. So here she is:

Here is the tank after I plugged the holes. I used large sheets of leftover acrylic I had. I first placed Weldon 16 around each hole and on the outer perimeter of the acrylic sheet.

It needs to cure for the next 48-72 hours. More than likely I will test leak and fill the tank Saturday or Sunday.

Then the next day I see this. Its the mark in front of the center overflow.

It is Weldon 16 that must have dripped on the side while I was fixing the overflow and the closed loop holes. Good thing is since it didn't smear it can be fixed.
It's about 1-1 1/2 inches long.

hey wayne! Glad to see the build coming along. The location for the tank in your house is perfect. looking forward to seeing it come together.

Now the leak test.

I believe I will stop here as there is no leaks. I will leave it like this with a powerhead or pump for a few days just to be safe.

That's all for now. Update will come later this month bud definitely the beginning of next month.

WOW! thats going to be insane! if you ever need any help let me know!!I would hate to do a water change on that!

Help is always helpful. I am a believer that two or more eyes are better than one. I have to finish the room the tank is going in so I will have a reef party helping me move the tank into the room. As for water changes, once the tank cycles i will be doing 7 gallon daily water changes. If that doesn't work then I will be doing 50 gallon water changes weekly.

daily water changes are great! I would love to do it with my 180 just cant figure out the details of how to get new saltwater into the tank because no more room under the stand for another container.

I can do mine manually because the space in my sump. I will be running two pumps on this tank so I can always shut one down, drain the water, add new saltwater and turn the pump back on.

are you building the stand for it? Also I take it you are doing a live reef with this right? I would hate to have to fill this thing up with coral and ROCK! ugh but it will be amazing once its done!

Wayne, the tank is awesome but my heart lies with your supervisor.:lolspin:

Thanks Sue, but I know the supervisor gets all the love.

I have a stand built for the tank but I have to do some modification to incorporate the style sump and the tall protein skimmer that will be underneath. Yes this will be a full live reef. Worse comes to worse, a cool predator tank.
