Well, i'm an idiot

So i finally got an R/O about a week or two ago, read the directions, states to pull the blue tab out and hook that up to the faucet, i saw another tab labled waste so i put that to waste and figured the last one was for the good water and put that on my bucket. well, apparently faucent meant good water, and i had the whole system working backwards. i was wondering why my cyno problem wasn't getting any better after 2 40% water changes, and i just had to order a new membrane. When the directions said pull the blue tab it meant the hose holder not the blue plug on the inlet. if i had looked at the canisters a little better or looked at the back of the box, something might have dawned on me, I hate Tuesdays.

Ouch! If it mkes you feel better, last night I thought to myself that one of the rocks would look better rotated about two inches. Resullt: Massive rockslide with several large SPS coral branches broken. We all make mistakes, hopefully we learn from them (although this wasn't my first rockslide).

I had a rock roll and hit the glass the other day, luckily it's a fairly new setup and no coral are on it.

Just bugs me, I wanted to change the water today as I hate constantly cleaning the cyno and I have to wait 2 more days as the membrane will need to be flushed after it arrives tomorrow.

Don't worry about it, EVERYONE at one point or another has done something... Well... off :)
The main part is that you recognized and fixed your problem.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but I sure hope your RODI water changes are better at eliminating cyano than mine are. Don't get me wrong, RODI is the only way to go, but don't expect miracles.

not looking for a miracle, i know i have to do a little more after the changes but its a good start to get it off my sand. I'll be cutting my lights more once the leather connects to the rock and seeing what else i can add to reduce the nitrates and phosphates. Once the matrix i just added to the filter gets going with bacteria it should help and i might be adding some stuff to it to control phosphates as well, possibly add more macro algae.

...don't expect miracles.

You got to believe, man!

that and a bucket of chicken. guilty pleasure #37, Major League.

That's tough about the RO. The added expense notwithstanding you learned a valuable lesson. Ask here. Someone more experienced screwing up the same thing will inevitably steer you clear of the shoal.

I topped off my first tank with saltwater for the first 3 months and couldn't figure out why my salinity was rising. My buddy asked, "Well we know you're not putting salt in your topoff water because salt doesn't evaporate. You aren't doing that are you?" "No..."

Lol been there... very confused first couple weeks....

Well, I can say i haven't made too many other mistakes at this time... I did think my shrimp died one day when i found his shell... Bought another smaller one, three days later i was like jesus he grows fast! Then the other one popped out to say hi and left me there looking stupid. I did the same thing with a crab as well, though when i found his skeleton it was still green and looked like it still had all the internal stuff in him. About a week or so later i noticed there was still two in my tank and was left confused.

I'm so worried about my critters dying, I added (literally) one snail, crab, shrimp at a time.
AND I do a head count almost every time I walk by my tank.
It's crazy how obsessed I am about doing this right.

if that's the worst mistake you make in this hobby, you're doing quite well. :)

it has been cool here the last few weeks, so i have been leaving my windows open to air out the house. usually works out real well.

unfortunately last week the day time temp got too high while i was at work, so i couldn't turn the AC on. the tank temp spiked too high and i ended up completely bleaching out my bird's nest. i've had that frag for almost a year at this point, and now he's toast. :(

luckily everything else in the tank seems just fine.
