What algae is this and how do I get rid of it. It looks purple. Under my leds but it's brown long hair without lights. uploadfromtaptalk1394392150811.jpg

My phosphate using API test kit is below 0.25 the second parameter on API test kit. And it's closer to the first which is 0. But according to the color on the first parameter mine is slightly above it. I have a WP25 at ELise mode at S3. And another power head not sure of the name plenty of circulation. Water parameters are.
SPS 1.025
Nitrates 0
Nitrites 0
Ammonia 0
Calcium 420
Alk 9
PH 8.2
Temp 79.2

Its probably diatoms if its lomg stringy and brown with no bubbles at its tips. One thing I will advise you is that phosphate api kits are crap. I use api for nitrate, calcium, and alkalinity and have had success. Phosphate I would recommend salifert or red sea. If you can get the hanna checker. If you arent sure about the levels good old water changes and possibly less feeding will get rid of the diatoms. Also a cleanup crew would be a great addition. Snails and crabs. They took care of my diatoms in a few days.

Thanks ERivera65. Which snails and crabs you recommend that are reef safe. Yeah I need to change test kit for phosphate ASAP.

looks more like cyano

do a google search for "cyanobacteria in saltwater aquarium" and look at images.

Usually the problem is related to phophates.

No thank goodness. No green bubble algae. Well I bought a media reactor and added phosban to the tank hopefully that begins to help. How often should I have to change out the media? Any other suggestions or tips on getting rid of Cyano?

Do u have a sump? Try alternating the sump like and DT lights. How long has your tank been setup? Looks like cyano from the picture.

with your ammonia at zero I doubt your in a cycle, but how old is the tank? did you recently just finish cycling? I agree with Dr.T, looks like cyan to me which can also show up during cycles or if you recently over-stirred a deep sand bed maybe and caused a "mini-cycle"

It was cyan it got out of control so I used Chemiclean. It's all gone. I have another algae that I need to get rid of I will post that today. See if I could get a good picture of it. Not sure which algae it is. My tank is only 5 months old. I have a sump that is 20gal. I did stir the sand bed could be the cause not sure. Now I'm alternating the lights sump at night and DT day.
