what do dips actually kill?

Just asking cuz I dipped an acro with red bugs in Coral Rx at twice the concentration and the bugs are not affected at all. Also, I have read ( can't confirm) that AEFW and monti nudis are also resistant to dips......soooo what exactly do dips kill ? Seems like nothing

Bayer kills AEFW, red bugs and montipora eating nudibranches. Lots of threads with details on the forum. No one has found the secret to killing AEFW eggs yet

Bayer is a good dip to help remove bugs. I prefer to use revive or coral rx to help remove them. I can see the coral pests through these dips where bayer is milky.

FWIW I ran a few tests with Bayer, AEFW will shrivel up and fall off the coral, but once placed back in salt water they will flatten back out and cruise the bottom if the container,

I also placed monti nudis in Bayer at a ridiculous dose and it did not kill them. I have yet to find a dip that will kill M.E.N. at the recommended dosage.

haven't tested Bayer with redbugs, maybe someone else has a confirmed kill rate.

I originally tested Bayer for red bugs and it did kill the red bugs but was amazed that it worked with AEFW by some mechanism. The AEFW fell off the SPS and was stunned for a few minutes. It is true that the AEFW will revive if placed back in fresh SW (I do not see the logic of doing this other than having lots of time in one's hands).

I've read several experiments (no links saved, sorry) of incredibly concentrated Bayer mixes not actually killing anything, causing such an intense sliming of sps that red bugs and flat worms cannot even stick to them or hold on, but staying alive in the Bayer mix for a very long time, up to an hour or more if I remember correctly. Fwiw it works really well at ridding sps of surface dwelling pests, but won't actually kill them, just makes them fall off

Small frags along with removing part of the base of the coral and old frag plugs. Then I use Melafix as a dip use a baster to blast all around the coral and inspect the coral and container with a 10x magnifying glass looking for bite marks or signs of a bug. Then place the frags in a 10 gallon frag tank along with 2 200 micron socks placed into one another and change them out everyday. The frag tank is attached to the main system but I can not set up a separate system so this is the best I can do. Then I do a weekly dips with 3 different types of dips, melafix, revive then bayer. If I notice nothing coming off the corals with dip and basting in the container after week 3 the coral goes in. If I notice anything coming off after any of the dips in the garbage it goes then I call the store or wholesaler and get my money back :)
