"Great man", ? don't know about all of that.
I think a lot of people (myself included) had a problem with appointment for life in the CVRC. On the other hand, the Pres. had a great deal of time and effort in putting it together and was willing to put in the time. Ron and Phil know as much/more about reefing as anyone that I personally know. They would be 2 of the first people I would ask if having issues. My first SW tank was setup in 1991, bought the tank at Jomars.
I think a lot of people (myself included) felt that these guys were sometimes using their positions to profit from frag sales. On the other hand, these were the same guys who were placing orders for $100 frags to bring them into the area for the rest of us to evenutally end up with. However, how many $50-$100 frags does a person buy that do not make it and can not be sold/traded around and you still have the shipping cost.
I think a lot of people (myself included) felt that the reason for the split from RC was so that there could be 100% control information, sensor, free to promote frag sales, etc. It left a bad taste in a few mouths. Again, we were still free to choose where to shop, where to post. I post in both. As others have mentioned, I do not have the time to organize such a group. It does take money and a great deal of time and dedication to organize a goup, put together the web site, do a group buy, bring in rare frags. Anyone willing to make this committment will for sure take some ownership.
Even back in the CVRC days when I would voice a complaint about issues from above, if the next day I had a reef issue the same people in the complaints would chime in with suggestions and be 100% helpful. I also would be surprised if anyone in this thread were to post on the club site tomorrow asking for help, they would get support from that same group of people.
I understand people wanting to remain separate due to past issues, so I agree with Bruce, as a former convict (I fixed it) once said, "can't we all just get along"?
