What do you think reefing will be like in the next twenty years? Innovations, etc...

If you'll permit me to be a bit sci-fi here, I don't expect it but if we have the technology I'm all for it.

We need to clone sea turtles and stunt their growth so that they don't grow more than a few inches. Then I can have a sea turtle reef in 20 years.

the best thing would be no collecting from reefs. all fish tank bred all corals proagated and all rock aquacultured. Maybe something that you can add to the tank so there is no need to wait weeks for the tank to cycle. Or cross bred fish the Clown Frogfish lol

In twenty years I believe:

The cost of energy will end extravagant leisure time activities and this is definitely an extravagant hobby.

The entire world will become a third world country like in Mad Max.

And no one in government or the scientific community really has any idea what we are going to do when the oil runs out.

Of course I thought people would give up their gas hog cars and stop smoking when the cost of gas and cigarettes got $1.00, so what do I know:cool:

I think the governments will look upon us (reefers) to sell back our corals or pieces of them as many dont think any of the major reefs will be around in 50 years. Hey finally the government would be giving back (Now thats a long shot)

Unfortunately, while I love the idea of repopulating the reefs from our tanks and have often contemplated it myself, we just don't maintain, as hobbyists, as tight of control on our stocking practices. Our corals have been introduced to just too many different things that aren't native to the reefs that they would be returned to, such as different bacteria, viruses, parasites, etc. I mean, just look at all the hitchhikers we get on liverock in the form of asterinas, bristlesworms, aiptasia, other coral polyps, bryopsis, copepods, amphipods, snails, crabs, etc. I really wish such a thing were possible, though (thinking along those lines is what makes me think that "farming" in small, selective areas might be more effective for both reef repopulation and for aquaculture).

.... although, now that we're talking about that, maybe, just maybe, there will be HUGE advances in getting rid of all those hitchhikers before they get into our tanks without doing any harm to the things we want to keep.... thus causing an end to QT and the mass rejoicing of all reefkeepers.

... yes, I live in a very happy and shiny world.

I have been reefing for the last 20 years and the 20 years before that. For me reefing has not changed much in the last 20 years. Before that there were big changes.
I think the next two decades will bring a halt to collecting animals in most places. Farm raised animals will be the big thing (maybe the only thing) Most or all rock will be farmed. LED lighting will be the norm. Much more people will be breeding and raising the fry for profit. More live food will be available. There will be a reef safe cure for ich, hair algae and cyano.
Better ways to cultivate anerobic bacteria to combat nitrates will be available. Bacteria will become custom grown for aquariums for our purposes.
I will be living on some South Pacific Island

Hell yeah... I want a miniature killer whale FOWLR tank with tiny monkeys that ride them through hoops.

I'd love to see the day when all our fish can be bred and nothing is collected. And yes, propagation is becoming huge.
