What equipment has PLEASANTLY surprised you: glad you got it items

I can name 3 items:
1. Tunze Easy Care magnet. It's much easier to clean along the bottom at sand level without risk of scratching your tank. [Acrylic owners, still be careful!]
2. Hydor Smart Level Autotopoff: has 4 levels and warning beeper. Levels are: way low---low but ok; high; and overfill. Overfill and low both have beepers. Magnet holds it in place, clips to secure lines. Tolerance is about half an inch down before fill kicks on, but fine for my tank. Only caution would be very small tank where half an inch is significant; or a sump that gets a lot of handling, because a jostle could angle the sensor up or down and mess up the reading. As topoff systems go, this is inexpensive, easy to set up, and has a lot of nice features. Reset is fairly fast. And it warns you when you need to fill your reservoir or when your return pump is not pumping.
3. Gyre: I don't use the pulse function---(there is a caution for thin-walled tanks or tanks apt to bow, and though mine is not thin-walled, I figure it would add up to strain on the fan, anyway.) I figure just a good rolling circulation does a nice enough job. It does as advertised, blows straight out and the flow rolls through the rock caves and any spaces underneath, eliminating dead spots. I have bought four powerheads, two of which broke, and I have gotten rid of all of them in favor of this one fairly trim unit, mounted transversely an inch from the surface.

Anyway, those are my favorite adds to the tank, equipment-wise.

a mrc calcium reactor with a second chamber along with a masterflex peristaltic pump. It's as close to a non maintenance item as I could hope for; saving me hours of two part mixing and dosing adjustments and providing unbelievable chemical stability. The 20 lb. tank gets refilled once per year, and the reactor media tow or three times per year

I have used pretty much every algae scraper over the years. IMHO, the Flipper is one of the very best. I use it almost exclusively with the scraper blade.

I really like my pair of Gyre 250's as well. I'm just amazed at how much water they can move.

On my 52 wedge I had another great arrangement: two Sea-swirls mounted facing each other across the wedge. Kept a marvelous water flow going, along with a 950 gph pump.

ATO best investment ever! and Magic eraser pads lol. I use it exclusively to clean my acrylic tank. I take a thin slice of it, put it between my magnets and go to work.

My jebao wavemakers and pump, the pump powers my 180 and is controllable, for 100 bucks. Not to mention they are as quiet as can be

OK, so the way you asked the question implies something that exceeded expectations. Lots of things I own that I really like that met expectations like CaRx, Vortech pumps, Apex, etc. Exceeded expectations ..... hmmn. Wrestled with a bunch of DiY kalk stirrers before finally buying the avast unit, works really well. Innovative Marne AiO nano tanks are pretty cool and not as ugly as I though they'd be.

I'll also put in a word for Eheim pumps. The little ones are tough enough to feed kalk year after year where other brands break down within weeks.

The piece of equipment that I was most pleasantly surprised was the Tunze ATO. Well, that and the larger RO/DI storage container that I bought to use with it. :)

I've got an Ultralife Float Switch that's about 16 years old without fail. I think I only paid like $75 bucks for it too. Somebody steered me right. ;)

Those Aquaclear filters last forever too though. (HOB)

Tunze ato. Can't believe I waited years to get one.

Bubble Magus dosing pump.

Used to top up daily and dose daily 2 part and magnesium. Work was/is hectic. Was forgetting to dose and top up consistently. These pieces of equipment surprised me alright.

Mars Aqua LED. $90, they've been going strong for about 3 years and growing corals and my gigantea and Magnifica anemones better than I could have imagined.

Best value for me was when I bought a used Reef Octopus HB1000 skimmer over 2 years ago for $60 with the pump.
Thing has been chugging along day in day out flawlessly. Pretty quiet too.
