Whether it be because of extreme aggression, drab adult coloration, boring behavior, high maintenance, or just a fish you're down right sick of, which fish do you have currently (or have had in the past) that you really wish you could travel back in time to stop yourself from purchasing? For me, it would definitely be the infamous 'Dexter' the Hoeven's wrasse. Ruthless tyrant and serial killer (I named him before I knew of this hobby of his ). Aside from him, I'll also have to go back to a year ago when I added a juvenile purple tang to my 120g, not considering he had the same coloration as my cherub angel, who was a bit larger than him, who made short work of the poor tang, which I could have easily avoided by leaving the tang at the store. Take it to the polls guys and vent your regrets :blown:

Halichoeres dispilus, chameleon wrasse. Although color variable, and there are interesting ones, mine is too drab and slightly aggressive. He also won't go anywhere near a fish trap.

Flame tail blenny. He decimated my large red plant and Tierra del fuego acros. And I can't catch the lil bugger out

Chromis for sure. They are fast little buggers, and when you have almost 100 lbs of rock in a 46 gallon tank, they are impossible to catch.

White Cheek Tang...infected my tank with ich and wiped out most my fish except for itself and 2 clownfish. Beautiful fish but a bit of a bully so had to sell it on instead of risking it in my DT again.

Of course one would 'regret' any fish that brought disease into the display; though, frankly, that's more on the aquarist rather than the fish. I've kept two fish that I never would again due to hyper-aggressiveness - three-stripe damsel and a sohal tag. Both were OK when small, a disaster when large. Other than that, nothing else comes to mind.

This^. Please read the stickies on intended fish purchases here on RC. Information, if obtained through persons with first hand knowledge or doing extensive research else where, is the only chance of success.

I threw caution to the wind on buying and killing my fare share of fish back in the yearly nineties when I first started out, because I was inpatient and didn't educate myself. On the other hand, even with all that, it still can be a crapshoot.

A Starry Blenny decided to take chunks out of a Yellowblotch Rabbitfish

I've heard the starries in particular can be aggressive towards other herbivores. I worked with a guy that had one that would leave bite marks on the side of his fowleri tang (he'd be banished to the sump if I were in his situation :furious:)

There is no option for "Other". I have two fish regrets, one was a firefish. Such beautiful coloration, but the fish had no personality. It basically sat around in one little spot. Boring. Nothing wrong with it, just not great. The other I regret was an assessor from ORA. Very healthy, but hid all the time and one day just disappeared.

Absolute worst was also the most beautiful: ghost eel. It ate 300 dollars worth of its tankmates before I could catch it and return it. That was where I learned that reef-safe and safe with tankmates are two different things.

Second was the dottyback: for low cunning, nippiness with others, and intelligence about spotting traps, second to none.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so many votes for wrasses Maybe because they're so frequently owned? Never had a problem with any of mine.

For me, easy answer. Black Combtooth (Tribal) Blenny. He killed 3 acros, 2 montis and a chalice and damaged a pavona and another monti. Would not get near a trap (even used one of the acros he was eating as bait). He finally made the mistake of going to bed one night in a rock I could easily remove!

Titan trigger I owned 18 years ago... Meanest fish I have ever had by a long shot. Would attack me anytime I put my arm or hand in the water

yellow kole's tang,....nasty fish, picks on any fish i add, luckily my hippo keeps him in check!

maroon clown. Those guys can get very territorial. Mine would actually pick up rocks 3x's his size and move it, if he didn't like it near his home

It is a tie between a melaranus wrasse and an orange spot goby. Between the two of them, my tank has a constant snowstorm of sand being blown around. They are constantly digging and/or moving the sand around. The goby is great for dumping sand all over the corals.

11th rule of reefing (which is why you don't hear about it much) is to never buy any animal for your tank that has the word 'titan' in its name
