i planning on doing a 30g cube tank, completely open top.

wanted to ask, what fish would you add to this tank? are all fish prone to jump? any guys sucessful with open tops?

am i better off just buying the cheapest fish? chromis etc?

anyhow thanks in advance

Dead ones...all fish can jump some are more prone to it then others(fairy wrasses, gobies) but your taking a risk with any fish. Nearly every fish I have I have seen jump but since I have glass tops I haven't lost one yet...knock on wood.

I would take the approach that all fishes can and might jump. Some add eggcrate while others have hoods that protect from carpet surfers.

I think jumping, with a few exceptions [scissortails], is much more a result of the combination of fish rather than the proclivities of most fish. Many fish jump as an escape tactic when caught near the surface by a threat they fear. If you have a mix of threats and threat-ees you are much more likely to have jumpers.

Also you can heighten the rim of your tank with a false rim, about the 9" useful with mh lights, and that will be as effective as any top. Very few tank fish can clear 9" at a leap.

Seahorses

I've seen them jump.... or atleast found them on the ground.

Maybe hawks and other swim bladderless fish?

I think that seahorses are incapable of jumping. I have seen them in the wild and in the aquarium. Their finning capability is minimum compared to their mass.

Well, until today I would have said tangs but talking to a fellow fishkeeper at a store today I found out that yellow tangs can jump out of tanks. I'd have to agree with Bubba. Dead fish are the only fish that won't jump out of tank.

Hawkfish can be notorious jumpers. Especially flame hawks, they are very sensitive to the lights turning on and off.

I had a frogfish jump out of a tank, twice. The first time, I discovered it about 30 minutes after the fact and fortunately revived him with some extreme measures.

The second time he jumped, I found him too late. :(

I do keep my tanks "open top" (as in no enclosed canopy) but I have them covered with eggcrate. Even with the eggcrate, I lost 1 jawfish and nearly lost a goby to jumping through a small gap I hadn't noticed. At feeding time, my maroon clown gets excited enough that she'll knock the eggcrate in her jumping.

sunburst anthias, chalk bass, gramma(i've only owened one so cant say for certain), pygmy angels or if you like agressive maybe a lion fish.

I say put whatever fish you want --- just construct some netting or an egg crate top for the tank or at least a little prison wall that bends inward around the rim
