what is a hornet?

i notice that you guys have purple,red etc hornets, just want to know what makes it a hornet? is it the ring? we dont name so much here in aus...we just describe the colour in most cases but are getting into the naming thing now.

i have these purple, pink ring and green frills (sorry real bad pic) would these be called a hornet of some kind?

not what you suggest different colouration and a distinct pink ring, i am more interested in what you guys define as a hornet and why you pay so much for a zoa? i will try to get an accurate picture.....

hornets like you stated have a ring.

they also have ALTERNATING color skirts/frills. which define them as hornets... over some other morph of zoanthus.

what you have pictured in your first post, are purple hearted zoas. my LFS has a million of them with red rings like that.

alternating skirts and a ring is all i was after - thanks for the info now i understand what you guys are on about.

As of right now there are only 3 hornet morphs at the moment, the true purple hornet brought in by Gary of reef pets, the blue hornet which is the same as the PH but whiteish coloration (circle around the mouth ) , and the Red hornet which was originally name Devils Aura originally I believe.

Unfortunately , due to the popularity and price of these specific polyps every one and their grandma are marketing any polyp with a ring on it. Which is why I put on my moniker " JUST BECAUSE IT HAS A RING ON IT, DOESN'T MEAN IT'S A HORNET " to poke fun at that issue.

Marketing is a fact of life, if everyone realized that stores have 200% mark up on clothing, everyone would be in an uproar. I'll let you in a little secret, They do.


Rememeber, Stores have to ship in 40 ugly corals that they loose money on to get one good coral you can make money on.

How many people do you see getting rich off this hobby? LOL, then you don't really know the folks making $$$$$$$ on selling singled eyed chalices for hundreds or single polyp zoa/paly frags for a 200-300 a polyp or 100-200 easy on a 1/2"-3/4th " sps frag.

i dont agree we have people selling the equiv of your green slimer which grows like crazy (is usually given away) in a zeo tank and sell for big $$$.

i buy my croals from collectors direct over here and get mixed boxes of all nice pieces (no ugly brown etc), our LFS are marking up 400% or so you guys are getting marked up about 2000%+ for aussie stuff from collectors sale pricing (unless they charge significantly more per piece and shipping which i am unsure of)

LFS do have very high overheads and i think the markup is justufiable but giving something a gimick name and charging huge pricing as people are willing to pay for the ridiculas $ is the fault of people buying and the $ will never go down if people do this.

I am ok paying big$ for things that are really nice looking and "rare" but I think the PH are coming in from the wild by the hundreds and people will stop paying the crazy prices soon. I do think there is more to the naming thing than just money. I like That if I lost one of my named zoas I could get another just like it.

hornet is nothing but a marketing name in order for a person to make money. but zoas/palys are not the only area to be seeing this like 650 said, it will continue until people refuse to pay these stupid high prices.
