WHAT is this strangeness of an alien trumpet thing?

So I found this thing in a tidepool in Hawaii. It's macroalgae, judging by the holdfasts and the fact that it doesn't respond to touch. It stands up quite well when gently removed from the water, and it feels about like stiffish rubber when gently pressed on. The trumpets are about an inch long, some a bit longer. I don't think it's some kind of fake thing for a practical joke, it's rooted very well to the rock. Looks fakeish, though.
Anybody seen this stuff before? I would have loved to take some home for myself, but I didn't know if it would survive travel or do well in my tank.
Until I know what it is, I'm going to refer to it as alien trumpet macroalgae. Because that should really be its name.

Found it in a tidal pool near the waves, so it had some circulation. Odd that there was only this one bit of it and no other pieces to be found anywhere nearby...
It's really cool! I'd totally put that in a reef tank if I could get some. Does it like high light?
Also, do you know if it has a common name? If not, I call naming rights, because that thing should really be called alien trumpet macroalgae.

Haha! I don't know of a common name, but if there is one it can't be any better than yours :-p

I only ever see this growing in shallow water, so it makes sense that it would like high- light environments. Tough little guys - they'd look great in a tank.

Used to step on those at beach when I was a kid and would always think it was a scorpionfish or glass...

Actually it's used it to catch scribbled rabbitfish and unicorn tang, at least my dad and uncles use it on Guam. Gotta use an eyeless hook(Japanese style) and cast over the reef into the surf break
