So I found this thing in a tidepool in Hawaii. It's macroalgae, judging by the holdfasts and the fact that it doesn't respond to touch. It stands up quite well when gently removed from the water, and it feels about like stiffish rubber when gently pressed on. The trumpets are about an inch long, some a bit longer. I don't think it's some kind of fake thing for a practical joke, it's rooted very well to the rock. Looks fakeish, though.
Anybody seen this stuff before? I would have loved to take some home for myself, but I didn't know if it would survive travel or do well in my tank.
Until I know what it is, I'm going to refer to it as alien trumpet macroalgae. Because that should really be its name.
