Thinking about getting a goby to finish off my fish wishlist. Any favorites people have? I would like one that sand sifts but won't tear my tank apart.

Very peaceful. I have a yellow tang, 4 pajama cardinals, and 1 sixline wrasse. I've never seen him go after anything. The tang went after the goby for the first couple hours in the tank, but I think that's because TJ abused him.

No trouble from the 6line? I had one of those bully a misc checkered goby years back.
Reason I ask is I was considering a rainford, tail spot blenniy and maybe one of the flasher wrasses for my 37g.
Ok, I'm also considering a jawfish, but the list is definitely a work in progress.

The smaller ones like the rainford and the shrimp goby won't clean the sand like you want. I have a high fin goby and he digs his hole and takes care of about 4 square inches of sand around the hole. If you want to keep your sand clean it's going to have to be a sleeper goby or I have a barred/dragon goby that keeps my sand spotless. I have had the sleeper goby carpet surf but my dragon goby has been doing fine for a year and a half. The dragon goby eats tons of hair algae off of the rocks also. The only downside is he tends to get sand on the rocks and some coral. Also my sleeper goby I had in the past would only clean 3/4 of my sand. For some reason it stayed on one side of the tank.

I like the larger watchman gobies of these genus': Cryptocentrus, Amblyeleotris, and Amblyeleotris. I guess this excludes just the Stonogobiops genus- they are just way too darn small. I've tried them and lost them way to many times. I'd had success with Wheeler's, Randall's, and Steinitz watchman's. The larger the better. I would warn against the pink spotted watchman-Cryptocentrus leptocephals. Fairly aggressive towards other goby, goby-like tank mates.

Besides the watchman, I have had success with Amblygobius phalaena, and my favorite, Valenciennea wardii or tiger watchman goby, even though not technically a "watchman."

Yes- I have a pink spotted- he now lives in the refugium - He was eating other gobys - tried to get a small school of firefish and they disappeared ( one per night) - thought the pink lobster I have was the problem- but took him out ( in the refugium) - but the firefish kept disappearing. Finally, I saw a tail hanging out of the pink diamonds mouth- out he goes- Yes, he did sand sift -but I like firefish.

Yikes! Are you kidding me? I know they are SEMI-aggressive, but eating your own cousins? What cool, little sand-sifting pink demons!

Not to get off topic but I just bought a Pink/Blue Spotted Watchman Goby 2 days ago and he seems like he really enjoys hiding a lot. The first nght I had him he was all over the tank? Is this normal? He is the biggest thing in the tank by far and nothing is a threat to him. He eats just fine, has no problem coming out at feeding time LOL

My yellow watchman used to be really shy. Now he spends pretty much all his time hanging out out where he can be seen. Maybe it's just an acclimation thing? (btw, this process took months)

mine orange dimond goby did the same thing for a week now he out and about and cleans the whole front of my tanks sand bed hes perfectly happy eating out of the sand and doesnt even bother to come up to eat when i feed the tank unles it falls in his mouth lol.

Anyone have any experience with neon gobies? I read they are good with helping pick parasites from other fish.
