what kills anemones???

I have a small white amenone with purple tips, not sure what type it is, I'm pretty new at all of this. I have had it about a month, and it has placed itself down on the sand in the rocks. I doesn't get much light but seemed to be fine. But tonight looking in the tank it has closed all up and looks like a big marshmallow. Have I killed it? What causes them to die, I have tested my water and everything is in order, the salt is right on and the temp is fine, any suggestions??

Well first, welcome to RC!
Nems do close up at night, may be OK.
A pic would really help to make sure you have a good nem.

Thanks, my kids just ran in to say he moved so I guess it's ok for now. I'm just figuring out this stuff, next I'll try the picture thing. Haven't quite figured how to get the pictures on the computer yet.

Sounds like you have a condylactis anenome from the Atlantic, a very hardy species. I had on that got shredded by a power head, the base was still in tact and it still survived.

Some more info would be helpful as well. What size tank? What type of lighting? How long has the tank been running? How long have you had the anemone? What are you feeding it?

My anemone closes up all the way at night sometimes, other times it just shrinks down quite a bit.

Just a little advice for you...If you go to MY RC at the top of the page, you can edit your profile, and display some info about your tank set up.

It's also very possible she has a bleached H. crispa - that's why a picture is so very helpful :) Welcome to RC by the way!!!

Because of the white color I would guess that regardless of what nem species you have, it's bleached and could probably use a little TLC.

Good luck!

You guys are all great. Can't wait to know enough to answer a question for someone. I did fill out a bit of of info on my tank yesterday, I am using the 2 MH lights, I believe they are the 400w, I have a guy that set it all up for me so I am working my way through what everything is. This site will be helping me a bunch! Thanks for the info everyone. I will work on a picture.

belive they are 400s? man your going to have a tough time replacing bulbs ( which you should do every 6 - 9 months )

Welcome to RC Christy. At least welcome to doing more than just reading }:cP.

For what it's worth I'm throwing my money on Haitian Pink Tip.
If you can't get any pictures of yours onto the CPU the next best thing would be to look up a couple of different anemone types and try to find a picture of one that matches what you have. Just an idea, but it may work if you are computer impaired }:c).

What color foot does the nem have? Most times Haitian's will have an orange/red colored foot. I can't remember if they have verrucae or not (those are the bumps on the underside of the nem).

If you check out a thread called Bleached to Healthy (it's a very recent thread) there's some before and after pictures of a crispa. I wonder if the before picture looks like what you have.

Is it eating yet?

Good luck :)
