What kind of acrylic?

I'm in the planning stage of building my own acrylic fuge, and in my research I'm having a horrible time figuring out what kind of acrylic should actually be used.

In my naivete, I assumed acrylic was acrylic; now that I've been researching I've found that's hardly the case. So when you guys build your own fuges and sumps, what type of acrylic are you using?

I use 1/4" acrylic. Manufacturerer is Cyro.

But what's the specific kind of 1/4" acrylic you used?

There are 2 main types I believe, cell cast and extruded. The extruded is much cheaper from what I hear but it absorbs water at a faster rate than cell cast. Not to say that it will be waterlogged or something, many people build sumps with that stuff. If money isn't an issue then go for the good stuff. 3/8" cell cast in my area runs about $160 for a standard sheet which was 50" x 99".

I would recommend two brands; Cyro GP and Spartech Polycast. These are both cell cast acrylic which is much stronger than extruded acrylic. Extruded acrylic is made in a big machine that rolls out the sheets under pressure, almost like the old playdough toys. Cell cast is poured into a big mold then dried.

Unfortunately, if you buy off brand cell cast you can be even worse off than with extruded, as the off brands usually have very inconsistent molecular weight, which means it melts unevenly, producing poor solvent weld joints. Sometimes these joints can look fine; then under some water pressure they leak. This is a big bummer.

If your fuge is really small, there's nothing really wrong with using quality extruded; Cyro FF is good stuff. Personally I think it's worth it to buy the cell cast, but it is getting pricey. Around here Cyro GP clear goes for around $180/sheet for 3/8" which is the thickness I use for sumps, skimmers, whatever. Last time I could find Spartech, it was $250 for a 5X8 sheet of black; now I can't find it at any sort of reasonable price. For some reason, Cyro black is more expensive, almost the same price for a 4X8 sheet. It's probably a quirk with the local stores; Spartech is considered the premium stuff. The plexiglass that GoldStripe is talking about is PlexiG I believe; also considered good but I've never used it. BTW Goldstripe, tough year for the 'noles.

Coogarts,

Matt pretty much has it right on (see above). If you stick with either Cyro GP or Polycast, you pretty much have the best in cell cast arylics. Plexiglas G is also good, the Chemcast material that Danferd asks about is good material but fairly unproven (longterm) in aquaria. There is no reason it shouldn't work well though, the plant that makes it was designed by the same folks that make Plexiglas.
If you want to use extruded material, be aware that they can craze easier; crazing is small microfractures due to stress. Most extruded materials are pretty much equal in strength, the major differences are aesthetic but IMO Cyro FF is about the best of the lot.

HTH,
James

mattboy, yes that is what I'm using Plexiglas G. Hopefully it'll work out good. It seems like quality stuff just working with it but then again I have 0 experience with anything else.

As for the 'Noles I thought it ended on a good note. Beating Miami and VaTech and almost Penn State too. I didn't think we had any business being in that game but we showed up and played well. Another top 5 recruiting class this year so we'll see what happens. I never miss a home game, it's a weekend long party!!
