I want a blue clam that doesn't get too big too fast. I have a 180 gallon tank w/ 3 x250 mh's and 3 x 80 t5's. My params are stable at 400 calcium, 9.5 alk, 0 trates, trites, amonia and phosphates.
depends on what you mean by big?? in a 180 you could easily keep a maxima or crocea ( the usual blue ones ). crocea's max out at about 6" while a maxima will grow to about 12". both will take years to get to their max size.
i would be more worried about the coral beauty than the clam getting to big. it is hit or miss whether those pygmy angels will go after clams but they can snap at any time.
he will probably be fine, there is always a chance though. i wanted one when i first set up my tank but didn't because i wanted a clam tank. of course they said the same thing about my algae blenny, that he might nip at the clams but all i've ever seen him do is clean the outside of the shell and the clam's don't even react.
