what salt do you guys use for your sps tanks? i have been using rc and this last batch mixes up to 14.5alk and wont mix clear for 2 days and every week when i do a 10g wc on my 120 it spikes my alk up a bit and idk if its the alk bump or some thing else but it takes a day or so for my sps to get good pe back.
and if i ever have to do a large emergency wc i would think the alk jump would kill every thing.

i do have a cal reactor now so i have no need for boosted alk mag ca salt anymore and the only reason i bought a box was i got it for $19 form a lfs that was closing and couldn't pass it up

what is every one lower alk salt recommendation for sps that is not close to $100 a box? or if the $$$ is worth it?

If you are looking to maintain a low alk I would check out Red Sea blue bucket. I have been using it and like it so far.

I run 8.3 with Seachem Reef Salt and it is $54 for a 200 gallon box with free freight. The cheapest Low Alk I have been able to find. Good Luck.

I use regular IO and drop the alk with muratic acid. It's very safe if you're comfortable handling such things.

Volume in gallons X # degrees kh you want to drop X .123 = ml muratic acid

For example here is my water change barrel and say I want to drop the alk from 10.5 to 7.5

25 gal X 3 X .123 = 9.225 ml of acid

I add the acid at least a couple days before the water change. The ph will dive after you add it, but will rebound in 24 hrs with aeration.

What hapens yo the alk that falls out? It cant just go away? And all it does is droop the alk?

And I went to the only lfs left and regular io was 80 a box f that. So it looks like I have to order salt whers a good place? And should I just get regular io or something else?

If you want cost no object salt I would recommend Aquavitro Salinity, it is Seachem's premium brand. It runs $80 to $90 a bucket, but it is 225 gals.

I have had great consistency using tropic marin salt and then dosing it up to 8 alk and 410 calc with their bio-calcium product, makes it super simple. Costs more but since the switch I have zero issues after water changes.

I have been using hw-Marinemix Reefer since March and my tank has never looked better. The Alk mixes a bit high at 9.1 at 1.025 but the results are speaking for themselves with me. I just mixed a batch this morning at 1.025 - Alk 9.1, Ca 440, Mg 1380. Very happy with this salt!
