Mine were fairly big before they started breeding.
My indicator that something was changing was when my trio broke apart and the dominant one (the female) started pounding away at the third. I removed the third one from the tank and now the spawn regularly.
I haven't raised any fry past 3 days (first and only attempt) but I have a breeding setup just about finished that I'm going to move them to and attempt to regularly breed and raise their fry.
From the knowledge I have gained by read others info that know far more than I do, I would say from 1 1/4" but more likely 1 1/2" would be the start of when they would reach maturity.
