What's the current market price for a Zebrasoma rostratum (Black Tang)?

Here's a picture of the tang when I got him-

Fanning island about 100 miles or so away from Kiribati (christmas island) has a lot of fish untouched due to the logistics of shipping off the island (very small island, broken runway, and a once a month boat that travels to and from Fanning to CXI)

Black tangs aren't deep, just rare. Usually, depending on the season, you will see very tiny ones or extremely big ones!

fair market for a 2-3" well adjusted black i would think would be 400.00 or so.

I think theres a $400 one thats 10 inches in nyaquatics.com

If anything then this one IMO would be worth more then that. A 10" black tang does not appeal to very many aquarists. Like Copps mentioned a good medium rostratum is the hardest size to come by and is in the highest demand. If this one is 2" it is a little under the general 'medium' but still a good aquarium candidate.

Nothing to be proud of. Goodbye.

This is no more illegal than the way many things are sold in the states. Its a loop hole. You can't sell the fish in SA, but you can give them away. So if you pay me a lot of money for some water I will give you a fish. Similar to ticket sales. Buy this $1000 t shirt and I will give you a ticket.

None of which is proper or ethical. In this case, it results in illegal black market fish sales, which is just an ENORMOUS black eye for this hobby. There is NO rationalizing which makes it OK. These laws are in place for a reason. Supporting and promoting illegal fish collection and sale is horrific, no matter how you look at it.

Guys, please keep the legalities of another fish off of this thread. It doesn't need to go that route, thank you.

Thanks for all the help on the fish everyone. :)

My apologies. I am a bit TOO passionate about that topic, sometimes.

Back to the question tat hand, a LFS here in Atlanta had one recently (in the past few months) for $400 that was 1.5-2" maybe.

My friend, if you're that passionate about it, you shouldnt keep fish and corals and continue this "war" , not as a hobbist.

We all know there are many grey areas in this hobby, at the same time we all know this hobby is so small compare to the real threats for the reef such as pollution, global warming and the food industry.

Sooo anyway...... saw a rostratum today, very awesome fish, as someone else said it must be seen in person. The guy at the store said he would only part with it for $1000 its more of a show fish and said he thinks purple tangs are nicer looking anyway but I totally disagree. This was the nicest looking tang Ive ever seen is not shiney black or charcoal black it is like a black hole pitch black. Id take one of these for $350 any day over a $250 flame wrasse or many other of the higher dollar fish.

I almost purchased one from my lfs last year for 400$, but something told me not to do it. I went back after a month the store owner told me I have a good and a bad news. The bad news was the tang died and the good news was that I did not buy it.

Yep, I totally agree! They're jet-black and very pretty!

I think considering the size/health of the fish, I think $500 is a reasonable price for me to ask. Thanks Again! :)
