Paul - I like the stuff in the tank as well, but I'd take the chain and can out. Even if it's only aluminum, it can create oxidation. Even stainless will do the same. All metals can decay if given enough time, and who know's what the by-products are that may be released into your tank. Very cool look though!

I read one of Paul's threads about it a year or two back. I'm pretty sure he's aware of the dangers of metal in a reef tank!
I think he coated them in urethane or somesuch before putting them in.

Hey Paul, I love the chain. Is it galvanized or what?

The chain I built out of acrylic and the can is coated with fiberglass resin.
I removed thecan because the fiberglass deteriated over time.
This thread is about unique, so, it's unique.

If it's galvanized, how bad is zinc for a reef tank?

Galvanized, or zinc is about as bad as copper

the fiberglass deteriated over time soooo what if u made a plywood tank and layered it with fiberglass sheets and resin like so many people have it will deteriate over time also so the tank is only good for so long?
awsome tank by the way paul love the chain!!

Lighting and canopy removed; when they are on you can only see the top skimmer cup.

Anything you put over wood will deteriate over time. The fiberglass is fine but the wood swells or shrinks with time making tiny cracks and gaps. When the water enters it further deteriates the wood and eventually the entire thing will fall apart.
They make some boat parts like that like the deck but the wood core is marine plywood which will hold up even when wet. The glues used in marine plywood may be detrimental to aquarium marine life.
