I got 2 emperor angelfish, 1 adult and a juvenile about 5 weeks ago. both were doing okay in the QT.

about a week ago both developed small circular patches on their lateral fins. their behavior is normal. but the patches seems to be at a constant level.

I don't want to move them to the DT until i figure this out.

does any one had encountered anything like this?

I just qt'ed a chalk basslet that had a blip on his anal fin after ttm and two rounds of prazi pro, it turned out it was lymphocystis. I posted a thread on this board in the desise section last week. I linked a pretty good write up lymph in the thread. It's posted last week. Title was something like chalk basslet with lymphocystis.

Check It out. The link noted its common in Angela. It's not fatal just cosmetic. Clean water and vitamin enriched food is the treatment. My basslet is looking great now after one week of stepped up water changes. good luck!!

Hi All

Thank you very much for the responses. I reduced the salinity to 1.008 and the next day the patches are gone. Planing to keep at this salinity for about a week and transfer it to the DT.

Way too soon.

I would slowly go back up in salinity, going from 1.008 back up to 1.026 (assuming that is your display) would be quite a jump in salinity. Fish handle a drop in salinity much better than they do a jump up.

Why would you do that now?

It seems hyposalinity has an effect on whatever this was, so I would recommend to keep it at where it is for a while to make sure it is really gone.
If it were flukes I would keep it at the current level for 3 weeks before starting the salinity ramp up over at least one week.

I spoke too soon. Very next day after i posted the last message i saw the spots again same location same pattern. I think my eyes were playing tricks. I tried to take pic but not visible on the pic.

After few days later i figured that this is Marine Velvet. the eyes were like velvet and somehow it had got into the DT as well.

I had some clown fish in the DT.

Moved all the fish into QT except for the 1 clown. I treated it with Copper. only lasted for 2 days. Poor fellow died today in the morning.

Oddly enough my emperor had bad velvet on the eyes so much so it was unable to see. But today in the morning it has got cleared out. and i was feeding as well.

the remaining clowns were the same, they had velvety patched on the body but it's clear now.

I've been giving the emperor FWD about 4 times a day.

Is there any safe way to treat them ?? i don't want to use copper.

Does anyone have any idea why it cleared suddenly? hope it's not to return with full force again !!!

This. As I said above, a minimum of 2 months quarantine.

Thanks snorvich.

Can you please explain why do you say 2 months quarantine?

My salinity is at 11 ppt and if i increase the temp to about 29 C and keep it at that level do you think i can reduce the quarantine time?

thanks

Fish acquired from a source running a low level of copper may have parasites that have masked their symptoms

no

11ppt is not effective against ich. It has to be at 1.009.

You are mixing things up!

11 ppt is as low as you can go without killing the fish!
That would be a salinity of 1.008! But I would keep it at 1.009 to allow for some margin of error.
