Just had my first here with a reef set up one full month, its gone up 300 THB - roughly 10 bucks...Outrageous....

- actually its heaven as my bills in the UK were 2-300£ a month

dhjmmem75

Bare in mind there is also a 30mtr pool... and the home roughly 1000 THB a month, so an increase of 300 THB... just for a reef tank... (we're also energy saving freaks... so really apart from water heater for shower, pumps for pool, fridge and lights nothing else really is ever on,... tv maybe once a week. oh laptop 24/7 and internet/wifi...

$300usd

860g DT all led, with 220g sump.

Upstairs 40g breeder used as my nicer fish acclimation/observation tank

Garage 400g QT and coral prop system.

My bill is $350 a month. My home is abou t22 sq ft. My tank is about 650 gallons total volume (480 display plus sump and two refugiums). While we don't use our AC much, my home theater and big plasma get a lot of use. That said, leading up to 2010, my electric bill was $1100 a month until I did a major upgrade to my tank (different sumps, pumps, skimmer, lights etc). Essentially, every was upgraded in the system except for the display. I had several external pumps, halides, VHO Fluorescent fixtures, Beckett skimmer and a big chiller that ran 12 hours a day keeping the water cool from all the heat transfer. I reduced my external pumps down to two, added a bunch of Tunze's and switched to LED's which resulted in a massive drop in my electricity usage and reflected on my bills. Best thing is that my tank has more flow then ever, is doing better than ever and the chiller hasn't turned on in years. It was a very expensive upgrade but it paid for itself the first year. Living in So. Cal we pay a lot of electricity as it is but the more you use, the higher the tier rates.

My electricity bills are around $130 - $170 but that covers most everything in the house AC in the summer - etc.

I live in Ontario Canada, and our rates would make california look like they are giving the power away lol

I just did the same - ditch the twin iwaki pumps, lose the halides, and get better heaters.

I switched to T5, Ecotech L1, pan world external for my external skimmer, and added sea swirls and sold 2 mp40,

I also changed my lighting schedule from all day to 5pm to 1:30 am.

Im not home during the day anyway, so it was kind of pointless.

My bill is around 300 a month for a 2500 sq ft house where we don't run AC and have installed all LED bulbs.

my tank isn't even big. if I did a 600 or 700 gallon tank? Id have to live in it. easily 1200+ a month for that.

Ontario sucks

I'm on the averaging plan, and pay $300 monthly all year. But since I started reefing, my average bill is up only $30 a month ( I track this stuff ).
My house is 2400 sq ft. and in the summer, i need AC 18-20 hours a day.
I'm tellin' ya, my tanks are a drop in proverbial bucket compared to my wIfe's sewing business. She runs an 1800w iron 12 -14 hours a day. Along with all the misc equipment.
Ah well, it's only money.

I also live in ontario canada and where im renting the Ac / heat and hot water is covered by the landlord. I only pay for whats plugged in the wall. I used to have a constant 60$ electrical bill and when I setup my tank I went up about 10-13$ a month. I find this to be the best baseline since I don't have to take in account the Ac for summer and heat for winter. The hot water tank is also a expensive cost I don't have to pay.

for a round number , id say my tank costs me 11.50$ of electricity a month... a minimal cost compared to what I spend on live stock :bum:

description of equipment is in my build thread in the sig !

I live in Iowa and have 1800 Sq ft hone and 220 gallon tank with 75 gallon sump and electricity is 70 dollars in winter and 100 dollars in summer

Mines around 400 but since I got dollar is around 180. I also live in California where it's crazy expensive for electricity.

You can estimate what your tank is costing for electricity pretty easily.

Your power bill lists how much you are charged per KW Hr. All your devices list how many watts they use.

Example: 500 watts of light on 8 hrs/day at $0.05 per KW Hr = 6 bucks a month for lighting.

Non tank homes in So Cal 70 a month.

My little 1300 sq ft,$ 250 for 9 months up to 400 in the summer.

Tier baby here number 4

Chicago-area NW IN, 1100sq ft apartment, my power bill is around 115-120 after upgrading to 135 gallons worth of DT, sump, and fuge with 330W going in to the Radiums, 120W of LED over my fuge, and 2 returns (Syncra 4 to DT, and a 2 to fuge).

That's up from 90 or so when I ran ~60 gallons through a 40B, sump, and 15 fuge with ~120W of LED over the entire thing.

$200 a month in the winter, haven't lived here in the summer yet. About 1000g of water with QTs give or take, depends on what QTs I have running at the time. Only the DT has lights, skimmer ect, the two QTs just have a filter, heater and powerhead.
