Where did you start???

I'm curious to hear how people started in their aquarium adventure. If you have any pictures please share them. I will post my first tank that I started in 2010...freshwater or saltwater.

Where did you start???

I started with my 30 saltwater with dead rock. I had an idea what i was doing csus i put live sand in but other than that i had a canister filter with a small piece of LR i got to seed it

Now that i look at this picture this was after i added some of the live rock and and replaced the canister with a HOB

I started with a 29 gal non reef ready hang on emperor 300 bio wheel no skimmer no sump no heater no ATO and no clue. When I finally started growing green hair algae all over my rock I said yeeeesss!!!!! I'm actually growing stuff I must be doing something right I started taking pictures and telling everybody at work that my tank is like an underwater lawn garden beautiful green grass growing everywhere. And then someone broke the news to me that I had a phosphate issue and that this was bad lmao!!! I was also using tap water for water changes. Now for the icing on the cake I had a purple tang a yellow tang a coral beauty a pair of clowns a single maroon clown 2 bar gobies 3 fire fish 5 green chromis a yellow tail blue devil a flame hawk fish fire shrimp cleaner shrimp and a baby lion fish. Needles to say I had a massive tank crash and then I met Eric Madtanks at PC after not seeing him from our time in service lol. He schooled me and then I upgraded and did it right sort of lol

No pics anymore but my progression/regression was 45g FW Tigerbarbs, cherry barbs, blood tetras and my fav a black ghost knife. The LFS gave me a slightly abused 135g 8' that I made a FOWLR (didnt know what that meant at the time) with lions, triggers and an angel fish as I lost intrest in the FW they became lion/trigger food minus the knife he was traded in. I moved and just couldnt deal with the 135 in my new place so I made the the 45 my first reef. I had some palys, mushrooms, gsp, bubble, frog spawn and a hammer. That was the tank that got taken out by a car. Also had a 50 breeder that a lot of triggers moved to. After a nice check from the insurance company I obtained a 90g aga stand and all kinds of goodies. That tank NEVER worked out for me. I quit for several years then restarted with the 15g show, which was great untill I decided that my arm was too big for a reef that size and moved to my current 28 bow.

I started keeping fish at age 9...and never stopped(I am now 44). Filled my parents house with tanks everywhere...and they allowed it. I am very lucky to have great parents!! I started the saltwater tanks at around age 20. Threw in a few corals(Brains)...and knew nothing about lighting. Even used dechlorinated tap water..and did water changes with a metal pot..Lol!! I remember bleaching my coral skeletons and rocks to keep them as white as can be..Lol. We used undergravel filters and protein skimmers with a wood airstone. All very fun memories. Information was scarce..and it was all a big experiment. I officially went modern reef about 13yrs ago with a 150gal. Moved 7yrs ago and went with my current 90gal. I also started koi keeping and competing around 13yrs ago. Went from a 6,000gal to my current 11,000gal pond 7yrs ago. Now, I am teaching this all to my 6yr old daughter. She currently has a 3 gal deep blue betta tank with 3 male bettas. The circle of life..Lol!!

In 2005, I had a 20 gallon high with a 4" mantis shrimp. It was at my high school. In sophmore science class, we each got given our own 20 gallon to maintain a fish tank. I was the only one that did saltwater. Sadly, I never took pictures of the thing.

cool, off on another pic hunt:) thanks BF

Lol what can I say, I like to know about people's history and what's going on with their tanks!! It gives people a reason to brag a little but about their success and provides others with a little humor about how we all got started, I mean did you see the black and red rocks in my tank! And a volcano to boot!! Which was and still is pretty sweet!!!

I had no rocks in with the mantis haha. It was just him in all his glory walking on a sandbed. We collected him right from the Sound
