Where have all the Southern Tier Reefers gone?

Wow,

Things are really slow around here. Can't be the economy has shut everybody down.

Must be everybody's tank is nice and stable with nothing to report.

Need some people to just say hello once in while.

The Lockheed fiasco has forced me to work out of the area (Pacific Ocean - helluva commute). Carol has been keeping everything alive and well. I am home for a solid month each time I get back so the system gets a good cleaning and usually some new stuff for her and the boys to look at. The only positive thing about being away is that I have noticed growth. The family keeps everything on a schedule with the systems and the fish are fat and happy......She picked me up a fish (juvi Chevron tang) yesterday that I have been trying to find for years........

I'm here lurking but due to job loss over a year ago I only have fresh water for now.I miss it but watch everyone else and their tanks grow:(

I've been going through one of those spells where nothing I do with my tank seems to work out... everything leads to algae, dead critters, leaks or blown fuses. Frustration is high, tank happiness is relatively low.

Hopefully things will turn around soon.

She get that at ABC in Syr??? I saw that lil' guy, AWESOME fish!!! nice snag!

Yes, Tim found one for us. I'm so glad he is around so we can get the quality specimens that we really want. I'm so tired of seeing the diseased crap in the stores in my immediate area. Once in a blue moon I see something that I might want to buy, but it has some funk on it that would probably infect my system. I've only had great stuff from ABC.....

As for some of the other Southern Tier reefers I think that life has just gotten in the way a bit. Fatrip had another kid and his priorities are school and family, Nate had another kid also, and Jerry got married and moved to a new house. Nate still has one of the finest looking display tanks that you will find anywhere and I'm sure Jerry's new setup will be awesome as well.

Still here...
My tank is pretty full now, so I'm in the grow out and maintenace stage... which is less fun/exciting than building/stocking and frag swapping. Battling nitrates a bit... which is also no fun.
Life has kept me pretty busy, but things should pick up over the winter

I just got started so I'm not heading anywere soon. I'm still stocking and getting my frags. Next up is some fish. Going to be placing a special order with Dave and Tim very soon. Also can't wait for that Frag meet there at ABC's...

I've been lurking for a while now.
This seemed like the right time to finally chime in and say "Hi".
I've had freshwater tanks for 15 years now, and recently I had my last fish die. He was a Red devil who had been in the family for just over 12 years.

So, I had a dry 55 gallon tank and thought I would try a reef tank.
I built a sump from a 30G tall I had around, got a skimmer, a pair of maxi jet 900's w/ sure flow 1600 upgrade, built a PVC overflow, installed a 4x54watt T5 fixture, and began a fish-less cycle with some ammonia I had around the house.

I found a good deal online for some live rock and placed an order.
It was Florida aqua cultured, So it's pretty dense. but the price was great, and it was completely covered in life. I picked it up for less than $1/pound.

The rock went into the tank, along with some "original grade" CaribSea live sand, 2 weeks ago and has been curing ever since.

There was some pretty significant die off of the rock in the first week, but the rock seems much healthier now. All kinds of little critters are making themselves known these days. I've got more feather dusters than I can count, some sort of clams, bristle worms, a few unidentified polyps, a nudibranch ( I think), some kind of SPS coral ( I suspect these will not make it ), and quite a bit of vegetation.

I've had my first diatom bloom (now being overtaken by hair algae ), and will hopefully be ready for a cleanup crew soon. I'll test tomorrow to see how far into the cycle I am.

Only regret so far is not going with a bigger tank. I'd like to plumb in another 55 that I have here but, I haven't worked out the details yet. Also considering a plywood build but space is a concern.

And because no post is complete without pics...

Can anybody help me put names to these critters?

rcid,

SPN has a 180 that I'm sure he would sell you.....

Dave

I assume you are referring to the "downsizing" thread.

He says :
"it is pretty scratched up, and probably best suited for use as a sump or hospital tank."

And besides, I don't have a stand or the space required right now.

I'm in the market for a house as well, so I'd like to keep things as portable as possible.

I just know the tank size will limit my options and is a little more difficult to stabilize.

I do appreciate the heads up though..

Still here as well. Nothing new has gone into the tank in the last few months. I've been pretty busy at work, and my apprenticeship class started up again, so that takes up quite a bit of time. I've been a little strapped for cash as well so no new frags or anything lately. I started building my canopy, which is a total pain on a corner bowfront tank! SPS have been growing out very well and have a lot of encrustment over the bases where they were glued on.

Future plans for my tank are to finish my canopy, where i will house a 250watt Mogul MH in a DIY Lumenbrite III type reflector and 2 - 24" T-5's on each back side and a 36" across the front. New LED setup will also be incorperated using 10-15 blue and purple 12volt automotive LED's. Also plans are in the works for a DIY overflow and 15gal sump/fuge and ATO.

Everything has been very slow going, but i get it done little by little. I'll try to get some fresh pics up over the weekend. Also, i'm mostly waiting for Finnyas Reef to re-open before I start picking up more frags.

I've been in between homes. We just received bank approval for our new home and we are preparing for closing and moving. I condensed stuff into my 75 gallon from the 125 and it essentially looks like a toilet. I haven't had the space or time to look after it properly and so I lost many sps and other corals. Softies and LPS are doing fine and I moved many corals into0 my 65 gallon display at my office which is actually looking very cool. Hopefully, after I established in my new home I can reinvigorate my home display and return it to its former glory:)
The zoo tank on the other hand is doing quite well however we have to deal with increasing aptasia colonization. That's the full report.
