I need sand for my 90 gallon tank and I checked 2 HD a lowes and a Toys R Us and no one has aragonite sand, it's all silicate... Petsmart has it for 1.05/lb but that's too much... I need something more around the $.10 / lb mark... Where can I get safe sand?

BTW Why would you want to put something in your sandbox for your kid if it said in plain English on the back "Known to the state of California to cause Cancer?"

how many lbs. are you looking for? Pet connection has aragonite and crushed coral for 1$ a lb. Id just buy the live sand at coral reef shop, its only 24$ for a 20lb. bag, 20 cents more but way worth it. if you want I have a bunch of left overs from a tank I just bought, I did not re-use the old sand, Its not healthy for the tank, but you can have it. some say you can bake it???? not sure. Good luck

90 gallon tank and 100 lbs of sand... I want to pay around 10 bucks for the sand and I know theres aragonite play sand out there somewhere... 5 bucks for 50lbs is what I want I'm more up in the Aqualife/Your Reef area... CRS is about a half hour away

What we want and get are usually very different. $.99 @ YR. Same @ aqualife and O st.

You could always go bare bottom until you can gather the funds. $100 bucks here, $100 bucks there; that is why this is the most expensive hobby known to man.

Which local beach has the best sand? XD
Seriously that might be the best bet... I could get 3-4 5 gallon buckets of it all and wash it out... I should be left with 2-3 buckets afterwards

Is that 20lbs of dry said vs 20lbs of wet sand? If you are compare dry sand to wet sand - then the difference is way more than 20 cents per pound.

If you are hoping to find SouthDown, give up. From everything I have read, it is not available on the West Coast.

If you must have cheap sand, I'd recommend looking at Dolomite sand. I'm told it was the popular budget sand years ago for marine aquarists. It is available for $3.60 per 50 lbs at Rocklin Rock (I think that is the place). It is limestone, so no silicates, right? It is very fine (sugar sized and smaller). It is very white, but has a few off color specs that may be dangerous contaminants. Grab a bag and do some tests on it.

Here is what it looks like:

I think Chemical Lime is the name of the company that packages the sand. The sand is made out of dolomite which is basically an alternative layer of CaCO3 (calcium carbonate) and MgCO3 (magnesium Carbonate). Crushed corals is basically CaCO3. I can't see MgCO3 hurting your tank. I searched to see if I can find a MSDS on the product, but could not. I personally wouldn't use it unless someone else can vouch for it or unless I can see the MSDS.

hey I have about 70 pounds of sand from my old 50g tank. Its been sitting on my patio for a about 2 months. Just a cleaning and it should be good as new. Then we can hook you up with a cup of live sand to seed your sand.

Its yours if you want It. Its not the fine sand, its just one size up.

LOL Butons gets it because I went to Aqualife and I get 100lbs of Oolic sand for .75 a pound... The only thing was it isn't screened and I even found some form of Bean in it O.o
