Where to find Bulk Dry Sand?

I need to purchase roughly 180 pounds of argonite sand. I'd prefer to buy dry sand to save money, and haven't had any luck finding a place that sells black sand online. Do you guys know of any?

Have you tried looking up a local sand/gravel/aggregate supply company? I don't know if they would have it, but it might be worth a phone call.

Look at Home Depot in the garden area for "Pavestone pulverized limestone", several old threads here on RC about it and I have had it in one of my tanks for going on 5 years. About $4 for 40 pounds the last time I bought any.

reefrocks.net hands down
$24.95 per 40 lbs shipping included.
Its a "finer" sand with various shells,etc.. pre-washed and ready to dump into a tank.
I don't find sandstorms to be a problem though at all as long as the powerheads are not directly right at the sand.

Only order from reefrocks if you order way before you need it. I ordered 80lbs 3 weeks ago and still havent recieved mine. I live in GA Reefrocks in in FL. I should have had it i less than a week.

I have also talked to Steve the owner 5 times each time he made a different excuse and promised that he would email me a tracking number that day. I still have no tracking information or any idea when I will recieve my order.

A bit of caution here. Buying sand not labeled as aquarium safe is riskey. Home Depot used to sell a great fine sand for reefs but changed from a calcium based sand to a silcone based sand. The silicone is not great for any reef tank but will work fine for fresh water tanks.

Carabean sea does sell a "black" sand for salt water use. Check your local Aquarium store if they can get from there suppliers.

Check Steven Pro in PA. He bought a ton of "Southdown" sand which is a reef safe sand that is no longer sold at box stores. I bought some from him for 25$ a overflowing 5 gallon bucket last year.
Google his name, I believe he has a store and it should come up.

Might work.

I know this is a little late but wondered about this as well. In my freshwater days we used black diamond blasting sand. Its $7 for a 50# bag. It never hurt any of my bottom feeders...included cory cats and some larger cats that ate off the bottom. Does anyone think this could work?

Black diamond was a prodict of that I used to use on my vresh water wamks as well. It was a potash basesd agivate that cane through cal fired electric power palands and was was screened and pre washed.

If it was misxed on say a 50/50 vases with standard calcium based sand I see where it would create any issues. Affter all potash is promarly carbon based and I have yed to eare about carbon being a problem in a salt water tank.

Maybe I am missing something. OP asked for "black aragonite sand". I don't think there can be such a thing. Calcium ain't black.
I am not sure where the bagged stuff comes from, but in nature the black sand is usually volcanic. I have a few bags for a future FOWLR, and IMHO it appears more sharp and crystalline then aragonite. I would not use it for burrowing animals, or in a reef, as it has no buffering qualities.
Dry fine aragonite can be had at my local Petsmart (maybe Petco, can't recall) for $1.00 lb in 20 lb bags.

You do realize that the 2 bottom links of sand you posted are intended only for freshwater correct? And petcos brand is non magnetic BTW.. its not the thahitan moon sand. I checked as I work there.
