Which clam would you recommend?

Im new to them but with my ensueing light upgrade Im interested in having a few.

My tank is a standard AGA 90 gallon...the lighting will be dual 400watt 10k halides, with 80 watts of NO actinic.

WHat would be a suitable clam for this setup? I like the blue maxima's a lot, would they be good? Any others?

Enlighten me here, im a total rookie on clam keeping.

Thanks

With that lighting setup, I would stay with Maxima's and Crocea's as they are the most light dependant. Squamosa's and Derasa's are a little deeper water clam, and could be kept in your setup, but I would try to shade them a little bit, so they would not get burnt by the intense lighting.

Are you going to have a sump with your setup, as heat could be an issue with the intensity of the 400 watters?

It never hurts to tell us about your setup in a little more detail, so everyone here can give a little more informed opinion.

One clam I would stay away from is a Gigas clam. This is where the term Giant Clam really comes from. These guys can reach over 3 feet in size, and over 500 lbs in weight.

It is my opinion that while a great animal, almost no one posses the right size reef tank to keep these long term.

Feel free to email me with any questions, or post here for a variety of answers.

Best of luck, Rob

Ok, to answer the questions, no I dont have a sump, I may set one up in the future but not right now. I have 70 pounds of LR for biological filtration, and I have two HOB skilter filters which are running carbon and floss. Sand bed is roughly 4"..a little deeper and a little shallower in some spots where fish have moved them. The only fish in the tank are a yellow tang, and a sixline wrasse. Inverts include a reef lobster, cleaner shrimp, sally lightfoot, blue legs, scarlets, turbo snails, cucumber. Current corals are a pearl bubble, a colt, green swollen brain, red seafan, button polyps, and an elephant ear mushroom. That's about it. Right now there is only the 80 watts of NO light over the tank in a regular strip light. I have my dual 400 watters in the mail enroute to me...which should be here early next week. I have a funny feeling my colt is not going to enjoy the new blast of light, but everything else should be good with it. I hope to make this a mainly LPS and SPS tank, with a few clams to set it off. And maybe another 1,2, or 3 small fish, depending on which I decide on.

Now, with alll that said....are there any incompatabilities with anything i have listed and any clams?

Thanks again!

Azonic,
IMO I would not have any clams in a tank with crabs. I would not have a clam with a lobster in myr tank.

Yes, I agree with Jim, crabs are at best a 50/50 with clams. I would never have a lobster in a tank with clams either. Try to be carefull with those 400 watters, they can very easily burn the hell outta your current corals. You are going to have to very slowly acclimate your setup to those new lights. Matbe start with one, very high off tank, and continue to lower it slowly and add 2nd 400 later. Anyhow, if crabs, and lobster aside your lighting will allow you clams and sps no problemo. Best of luck, Rob
