griss' Tank Upgrade Thread

Okay, need a little help here. My new tank pvc is supposedly Japanese metric (JIS). The return is 25mm JIS and the overflows are 32mm JIS. I want to simply use a coupler like this to convert these to standard. I want to convert the 25mm to 3/4" and the 32mm to 1" if possible.

I reached out to Pro Clear and one of their sales people responded and was somewhat helpful. I think he didn't want to get too specific and he didn't want to feel responsible if I bought the wrong fittings, I get that. He suggested I reach out of Flexpvc.com (linked above). He further stated:

JIS 25mm is the equivalent to and outer diameter of 32mm while DIN (European metric) is 1:1. (In this case JIS25 and DIM 32 both have an outer diameter of 32mm). With this, the JIS 20mm converts to DIN 25mm.

I tried to use the Contact Us form on Flex PVC's website for more guidance and I keep getting an error that states "cannot process at this time" whenever I click submit. So, if anyone has some guidance I'd greatly appreciate it.

Would these work? I see the 32mm is out of stock but they are made by Adaptive Reef. Maybe reach out to them or see if other sites carry their products.

Nevermind. I see where you said they wouldn't work. Maybe still reach out to Adaptive Reef to see if they have any other options or suggestions.

The 32 mm jis has an OD of 42.7mm. 1 1/4" PVC has an OD of 42.16mm. My DIY self would just sandpaper the jis pipe until a 1 1/4 coupler would slide on and hence convert to 1 1/4 standard PVC. This is assuming the charts I found are correct.

After reading what I can find.
I have no idea.
A list of JIS pipe sizes does not contain 32mm pipe. It looks to me like what you have are the 20mm and 25mm sizes.
iu

which have 25 and 32mm ODs
Which would seem to mean you need DIN 25 and 32 adapters

This is how BRS sells them but out of stock.
DN25 (25mm to 3/4") Metric to Standard PVC Coupler - Slip X Slip
DN32 (32mm to 1") Metric to Standard PVC Coupler - Slip X Slip

The parts on the tank. Are they male or female?

I do not think you have a pink elephant. You need 2 of the common sizes available. I would get the 25 and 32 mm adapters and. start there.

Are you dealing with bulkheads or cut off pipes coming out?

A caliper in never a bad thing to own. Harbor freight but gun reloading supply places have fairly decent ones cheap. Accurate enough to make bullets is good for me. I am not doing rocket surgery.

Here's what I'm dealing with, ProStar Plumbing Diagram. My hope is I can use the metric to standard unions to convert at the existing unions.

I'm going to get a generator from Harbor Freight soon. I'll pick up some calipers when I do so.

Oh, no progress today. Went to visit our daughter, SIL, 2 YO granddaughter and our 5 day old grandson.

Note to self @wvned reloads. Send him brass next time I go to the range:ROFLMAO:
Nope, don't even have a press anymore. People with Parkinson's mostly drop guns. I gave most all of them except a few favorites to family or converted to cash. Fish food is expensive.

Got one circuit run today. As I started to drill holes to run the wire for the second circuit, my drill battery died. The backup was also dead and not taking a charge. Guess I'm going to have to buy some backup batteries.

I also decided to add another outlet to the second circuit and don't have enough wire to finish that all out. So, battery is charging now and I'll pick up more wire next weekend and finish off the wiring.

I was looking at the plumbing on the new tank and noticed the unions are glued to pipe (a slp/mpt) fitting that screws onto the bulkhead. Here's what they look like.

What else I noticed, much to my shock is these unions are very clearly marked. This may have cleared things up a bit. As mentioned upthread, everything I've read on the internet is the Pro Clear uses Japanese (JIS) metric fittings, not European (DIN) metric fittings. These are marked 1"(DN25) and 3/4"(DN20). I quick internet search shows a DN designation as Diameter Nominal and these seem to correlate to the JIS sizes listed in the chart Ned posted above.

JIS26 = Nominal 20 = 3/4"
JIS 32 = Nominal 25 = 1"

I ordered Coralvue 25mm to 3/4" and 32mm to 1" yesterday. So, again, based on Ned's chart, I think I ordered the correct ones? If I'm understanding correctly:

JIS26 - Nominal 20 - DIN25 = 3/4"
JIS32 - Nominal 25 - DIN32 = 1"

All that to say, I hope I can use half the new unions with half the existing unions to maybe just connect everything together.

First, for the record, even though this tank is still empty, I’m very impressed with everything about it…even the quirky metric plumbing.

I read a couple reviews about the overflow not being sealed well. Since this is a used tank and I’m getting close to setting it up, I looked in the overflow. The inside of the overflow is the tightest I’ve seen is all my years in the hobby.

Anyway, the overflow is FULL of of tube worm tubes. So, I figured since I can’t scrub them out (due to how crowded it is) I’ll just fill the overflow with vinegar to dissolve them.

Nope. As soon as I dumped a gallon of vinegar in, it started pouring out 4 places in the overflow. Sand (which must have gotten in there) was coming out. So, I guess another project is going to seal that up.

Wire is all run. Despite my friend Andy dragging me to some LFS today. I still need to move the two outlets that are on either side of the tank. I spaced them for a 4’ tank and with the 150 5’ tank these won’t work.

Picked up a couple Acro frags from the LFS. Nothing spectacular but some nice frags.

Earlier this week I added a Populargrow Blue LED and added the second one to the current tank.

Next step, order the drywall, wait for sister’s boyfriend to come back in town from a job and pay him to drywall, mud and tape.

Then flooring and baseboard.

Slowly getting closer.

What specifically are you needing help with? The sizing or that exact coupler?

I think I found what I need thanks to Carlos at Coralvue. The metric to imperial unions they sell see like they will fit the metric pvc pipe. I just need to get some 3/4" and 1" pvc (don't have either at home right now) to make sure.
