Which is this? Poma, Blueline, Orangeface?

Just picked this guy up. Had to do 2 trips to the LFS, thought he was a Poma Angel juvi, but searching around, I'm almost positive he's not. That would leave me with two other options, a Blueline Angel or Orangeface Angel. Wouldn't mind either lol. I gathered a couple pics of each. If anyone has input as to what my fish is, please share.

Poma -- Chaetodontoplus melanosoma

Blueline -- Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis

Orangeface -- Chaetodontoplus chrysocephalus

And pics of my guy...

I would second the Poma. Juvi Bluelines are rarely seen in the hobby, I have been looking for years. Cool looking fish anyway, good luck.

From your photos it could be a septentrionalis or a chrysocephalus but your picture isn't very clear.

Could you see any blue lines starting just behind the yellow bar? What color are his ventral fins?

Yea, I normally would think so too. That's just that from all the pics, Poma Juvi's that at least a half black/half yellow caudal, and black/yellow pelvic fins. My fish's tail is completely yellow and the pelvic fins are solid black. I asked the girl at the LFS and in the 6 months that she's been there, they've never gotten a juvi in (they've had adult Pomas on the regular). There are all so close and come from the same region, it's possible I would think?

No lines yet, a bit washed in color from the bag. The ventrals (pelvics IIRC?) are all black.

Well all the pics I've seen of pomas have yellow ventrals - sure would be cool if you got a blue line.

Can you try scraping behind the yellow line with your fingernail, maybe the blue is hiding under there  J/k of course :D

Here another crappy pic in QT. All I have is point and shoots. But yea, definitely has the all black ventral and all yellow tail.

I have read where they are captive breeding the Bluelines now in Asia. What did the lfs say they ordered? Where did their supplier get the fish? That may help you discover what fish it is at this stage.

They said it was a Poma. My brother and I had initially gone to the store and saw the fish. He remembered finding the site(japanese FishPix) I got most of those thumbnail pics and drooling over all those Blueline pics. We came home, checked out the pics and went back and bought him. The LFS is sort of weird, the employees are knowledgeable about the hobby, as to where/how fish come, I dunno. Their fish are usually health and sometimes they have damn good deals on fish ($200 for a golden puffer), so I don't like to get too involved. Maybe after I am finished with my tanks, I'll still picking their brains lol.

It is most likely a juvenile bluespotted angelfish. My full grown adult is my aviatar. They have only been documented so far around Cebu (phillipines.) Check for blue spots on the body. Sometimes they aren't very visible so you may need to shine the body with a flashlight.

It for sure is NOT a poma.

I'll give you my opinion strictly based on photo comparison.

I notice that the juvi Poma has a relatively wide band of yellow on the dorsal fin. The juvi Blueline has a comparatively narrow band of yellow on the edge of the dorsal (as does your specimen). Based on that striking difference alone, I'd say yours is far more likely to be a juvi Blueline than a juvi Poma.

I have noticed that most of the juvi Chaetodontoplus angels look very similar but this doesn't look like a poma to me either. Could be a bluespot or maybe a meridith's or one of those poorly described species like the vanderloo's.

I ruled out the Orangeface because the one pictured has no yellow on the anal fin. Your specimen does.
