Which Photoshop is for me?

Hi all,

I was just wanting a quick survey of what version of Photoshop you all are using and how you obtained it. PMs are welcome.

I just bought my first dslr (Nikon D40), and I'm not a huge fan of the software package that came with it. I've heard of Infranview, but I'd like to get some opinions on which Photoshop would be best for me. I'm no pro, but I would like to have some extended editing ability with my Nikon as mine doesn't even allow editing a RAW image.

A friend of mine just told me about Picasa 2 from Google. It is a free download and lets you do a lot of stuff. Give that a try for a free program. It is easy to use. As far as bought programs I will let someone with more knowledge chime in.

Photoshop Elements would be a great place to start. You should be able to get it for less than $100 and will do most of the basic things that folks use PS for. You might also want to take a look at Lightroom for simplifying your RAW workflow.

I would definately look at elements as Doug suggested. Usually Adobe has a trial period on their software. Download it and see if it works for you.

If you find yourself wanting the full blown version of PS, look for Something like PS version 7 and then buy the upgrade. It will cut the price in half.

neat image works grate for removing noise and ill second that on Picasa 2 it easy to ues and free what more could you ask for.

I second the Lightroom option for RAW images. It has an amazing amount of flexibility and I find the quality top-notch. I don't think I could find myself using anything else.

Yes. Camera RAW v4 works with Elements 5 so you should be covered.
