Which salt?

Like the title says, I want to start a thread for newer reefers who may have one of the most basic questions in reefkeeping.

Which salt does everyone use?

Ive heard many mixed reviews about almost every salt mix and just wanted to get everyones opinions. (plus ask a question that I bet some people are wondering)

TIA for the info!

For my style of reefing I was innitially happy with Oceanic as I didnt have calcium supplements but had alk. But now that I have everything and theres been more numbers on each element passed around along with awesome testamonies of what I would consider successfull, I've been now using Reef Crystals for the past year or so. I find I have to mess with alkalinity much less and requires very little supplementation and kalkwasser usually is able to tide me over to the next water change which is right up my alley.

Brian, what's up with Reefer's best? This is the first I'm hearing about it. Is it better than Reef Crystals? If so, why?
Thanks for the info.

lots of people jumping ship in the last several months regarding Reef Crystals. There is a recent thread on BAR that mentions a lot of people don't trust it anymore.

Reef Crystals. I'm sitting on 4-5 buckets and pretty sure it wasn't the "off" batch stuff. I like staying consistent. As long as Reef Crystals doesn't have any more problems, I'm not likely to switch.

whats up with the off batch? What was off about it? I missed that one..
wonder if Im dealing with an off batch...or was it waaay off? Do tell :)

Good imput so far everyone!

Thats one of the reasons I wanted to start this thread. I recently saw some threads about "bad" batches of reef crystals. I currently use oceanic and have been pretty happy with it.

Is there any real evidence as to problems recently with Reef Crystals?

Yes, there was one or more batches that had considerably less alk and calc supplement than normal (think instant ocean levels).

I must have missed those batches. Never had an issue with Reef Crystals and the price is unbeatable.

$99+shipping for salt? WOW! Your a baller, Brian:)

Reef Crystals in my reef ,
My sharks and fish only's coral life, and yes I have a ton of shirts, if anyone wants a coral life shirt let me know LOL.

Short answer, Yes. I've gone through 3 buckets in the last 6 months, bought at different times, including the last purchased a month ago. All have been low on either Ca, Alk, or both. It's a pain having to test every batch of SW made and add supps to get it up to spec. I heard about the bad batch, and waited to buy another until well after it seemed reasonable that the issue was solved. The last bucket was right on for Alk, but running 350 for CA. The previous 2 were running 350 CA and 7 Alk. Mg was a little sporadic, with the lowest testing out at 1200, and one testing over 1600. My confidence with Reef Crystals is a bit shaken at this point.
