Which tang?

I agree with those saying a 2' tang would make the tank look small. What about a Maculiceps Tang?

Those tangs you mention get too big, IMO.

Thanks for the reply! I have a Fowleri on the list but wanted to add it later down the road since I'm not 100% sure about their aggression level.

I've had two buddies keep them, and they never bothered a thing. One described his as a "pushover" being that he was the biggest fish in the tank, and got put in his place by fish half its size.

Mine is still small, but is very timid. I wouldn't worry too much about aggression. The reason I chose it over a duss is the general consensus that they are very mild mannered.

Well you guys aren't making this anymore clear for me if you will! Brett, a Sohal scares me since I plan on having some pricey Angels in the tank and would be extremely upset if it killed one plus that means NO fish after one is added. Same with a clown tang, also I'm thinking about a Achilles for the last round of fish. Achilles Torben, I agree with you that large fish in a tank no matter what size make the tank look small. This isn't a easy decision to say the least. Some combination of these fish were going to be next for QT since they are all very docile but I'm not sure I have anymore clarity on the matter

I think you should go with one of the original two you wanted, a vlamingi or a unicorn. AND everyone that said a vlamingi is wrong and you should choose a unicorn!

Would have weighed in sooner, but I've been on vacation for the last few weeks...

My vote definitely goes to N. unicornis. Both of mine are right around the 12" mark, and are starting to develop the horn and bright blue caudal spines and trim (a good amount of yellow is starting to come in as well). They are very friendly and easy-going fish. My N. vlamingii on the other hand is much more reclusive, and can be a bit of a bully toward it's tank mates at times. Seems like I have the exception here.

I may have posted these pics elsewhere, but here are a couple recent shots of my N. unicornis...

...One more to show how thick these guys are.

Ever since I saw these guys in person I've wanted one. Never see this color in the trade though just the light colored ones.

Dmorty - what are the dimensions of your 625g and do you have a build thread? I'm starring at a wall in my living room and dreaming of being able to be caught in such a tough decision!

I think the Vlamingi is the better color option while the Unicorn, is the cooler looking of the two.

I'm not sure how far along your tank is, but try to picture it with both. I've seen a large aquarium before that had a Unicorn that looked a bit out of place because everything else was so vividly colored... almost an eye sore which sounds strange because it is such a cool fish. I will say that it wasn't the chunker that mariarty (to whom I mean no disrespect) has and its adult colors weren't showing much in the smaller 9-10" the specimen I saw was (perhaps not as well taken care of in terms of water quality and diet in addition to being not as mature).

I think the Vlamingi gives you the best all around fish that is colorful enough to swim along side the Angels you want but is unique enough to stand out--but not stand out for the wrong reasons.

Good Luck
Mike

The tank is 7x6x2ft. Build thread under large tanks, started by Marinelife. Tank is cycling, my fish list also keeps getting smaller.

Good God, that's healthy tang!!!

Absolutely Naso unicornis, get two or three of them too if you can, I've seen them break up fights between other tangs and fish at public aquariums, lol.

My little tank can't hold multiple tangs that get 15"+ easily... It's not a pool sized aquarium

I have both a vlamingii and a unicorn along with a fowleri and a yellow fin which will get bigger than all of them. The fowleri is the prettiest with the most personality , nasos are the friendliest and yellow fin the most active and fastest growing.

If I had to choose one it would be the fowleri or dussimier
