OT- hows the triggers doing in your reef pnavarro170 or is it a FOWLR right now until you find corals?

triggers are doing great, still hide for most of the day, male eats like if its going out of style, female eating just still more shy. and yes its a fowlr for now, im planning everything early, hope to get some SPS corals in next month, add a fish or 2 this month, and hopefully add the tangs in a couple months.

and thanks for the back up, these tang pinkertons are ridiculous. im in the hobby to enjoy it. not be scared if a fish is happy and grows. if it does. great, ill get a bigger tank or make sure a fellow local club member would want him. either way. thats being responsible in my book also.

I see where you guys are coming from and all, but trust me Ive been there. When I was first starting out in the hobby I had a 20 gallon tall eclipse FOWLR. Guess what was in it? A snow flake, dog face, clown tang and yellow tang. Yeah I messed up bigtime and would seriously not recommend that path, the only thing that lived was the eel and he still didnt eat for 9 months after that. Sure you can do what ever you want to the tank, doesn't mean it will work though. If youre not careful and arent patient this is not the hobby for you. I used to not be patient and learned patience throught the hobby and it's always worked out if I take it slow with my tank.

For us "pinkertons" we are trying to steer you in the right direction! Unfortunatley the way you're headed this hobby might not be as much fun but more stressful. Most of us"pinkertons" have been down the road you've been down and we've learned. Yes, you will learn too it may be the easy way or hard way it really depends.

SantaCruzReefer, i understand your side aswell. and you are my favorite pinkerton, haha you come off very well. no joke. but if i decide to add one extra tang to my tank for now doesnt mean im putting some out of this world deadly combination in the tank. i know your heart means well just understand so does mine. if one grows completely out of control in the next year then i will take care of that good problem in a responsible way.

but what we are saying is that say i got a 1 inch clown fish, doesnt mean he has to be in a 200 gallon tank to start,

Thanks:thumbsup: Yeah, I mean go ahead a get a tang or 2 just choose the right ones. A Hippo that gets to be a foot long in a short time is a no go, but a chevron tang or yellow tang, both of which are my some of my favorite tangs would be very well set for a year or two. Also don't focus on fish as much............trust me in few months it'll be all about the coral. Like me, fish have left the picture... all I want nowadays is coral. Also Im not sure if it's the same with you but when I have a fish unless it compleyley sucks, I develop an emotional attachment to the fish. So I'd have a hard time giving the fish up.Thats why I try to get fish that can live in my system for a long time. You know what Im saying?

yeah i got ya SantaCruz, i did a mixed 120 reef last, lps, sps, some softies, and a very random assortment of fish on that one, naso, lion, niger, even a parrotfish ! sorry it was an impulse buy at the time. didnt even know it was a difficult keeper. could have fooled me. anyways it thrived and i had to tear it down due to a move.

this tank has been in my head for years. minimal rock and room for a few hand picked sps to grow. more room for more fish. so minimalist design with lots of fish. just something different. so i am about the fish this time.

id do a more coral focused tank but not when i know im gonna have to move in a years time. ill probably end up setting up something else also now, maybe a long 125+ fish only. a 20 long frag tank. are in my head aswell

i like to learn and try different things. not just the same tank in a larger scale always.

i have and they are very pricey, haha, gonna have to pass. once i get a home built and i know im not moving i will add things like that, not when i know im gonna have to move you know.

if they price of a bigger tank isnt a problem then why is the price of a tang? dude just wait until you get a bigger tank to add the 3rd tang and be happy with 2. you could avoid a lot more problems by doing that.

you should also probably add more live rock to your display if you arent going to take advice you asked for and add a 3rd tang. there's beneficial reasons for that. tangs are messy and the rock will help more with filtration. especially if you must have 3 tangs, your tank already looks a little full from the pic. it will also give the tangs and other fish more places to hide

Why did you ask for advice if you didn't really want any? You had your mind made up before you posted. You've had some very knowledgeable folks chiming in and they are all telling you the same thing. Doesn't that kind of clue you in? No, you choose to listen to the two posters saying what you want to attempt is ok. These same people mind you, have a hippo tang in a 2.5 gallon tank. So take what of it you will:

Your tank is too small for the following: naso tang, hippo tang, clown tang, sohal tang, sailfin tang, powder brown tang, powder blue tang, atlantic blue tang, orange shoulder...

The ones that I suggest for your CURRENT SETUP: yellow and chevron/kole. OR purple and chevron/kole.

But NOT 3 yellows with some others. That's irresponsible reefkeeping in a 90. Whether you upgrade next week or next year doesn't matter. You should stock your CURRENT tank with the fish's FULL GROWN SIZE in mind, not their current size. And by the way, a 4" tang is not small. Not by a long shot.

If you add 3 or 4 to this newly setup tank, you're doomed. Not trying to be mean, just telling it like it is. As others have said, I've down this road and learned the hard way. Just because you pay for them, doesn't mean you should do whatever you feel like with them. And a 90 gallon tank is a 90 gallon tank. Open rock work doesn't give them any more room for swimming. They still can only go 45" back and forth. Less rock also means less grazing area. And you better keep that water pristine with tangs in it.

To all the folks here that said 'tang police this' and 'tang police that', it has nothing to do with that. We're simply telling this person the CORRECT way to go about stocking his tank to avoid him killing fish/getting frustrated with his unsuccessful tank.

ethan, do u need to read it again, also equipment is on thing, im not one to drop $200-$300 on a small fish. and im not worried about the mess. thats why i have a skimmer rated for a stocked 150.

so first you say add these three, then u say if i ad 3 or 4 im doomed. which is it?. im saying im adding kole and powder brown. and a small 3 inch something else. if it gets huge great, ill get a bigger tank or see if my local reef club wants him !!! JEEEEEEZ UUUUUUUUUUSS

open rock work does give them more room for swimming, i understand it doesnt make the tank longer. but i usually see 2lbs per gallon at least on alot of tanks. that would be less swimming area. but thank god they can fly across that front???? i understand the grazing and hiding part, so i have to take care of them dont i.

and you dont have to get a fish for what size it might be one day, if you got 1-3 inch fish in a 200+ gallon they would probably get sucked up in equipment. and look dumb even if they dont.

look guys im sorry i started this thread, i wasnt looking for advice on whether i should or not, i was looking for help with picking 3 fish. yes tangs 3 of them in a 90. my lease is up in a year. and if i get 3 inch fish i really dont think its a big deal to house them in it for now. i love watching them grow. i hope they do grow to where i gotta get a bigger tank or have to find them a home. Not a [profanity]. I will end up getting a small tang that hopefully doesnt grow a foot in a year. but for now id like to enjoy him.

Unfortunately, there are people who completely ignore any sane stocking practices, and instead believe that whatever they "want" to do is appropriate.

There is zero reason to argue, debate, or discuss stocking levels with these individuals.
